In reply to: Installing upgradesI wonder if the legacy Frontpage files in the root directory, place by a previous web-manager, are causing problems? I don’t want to go removing the old stuff willi-nilly, but if files like vti_bin and vti_if.html might be a problem, I could trash them, as I use Dreamweaver / bbedit.
Also kmessinger had a tip about an addition to the .htaccess file “SeFilterInheritance Off” when addressing another issue like mine.
There is legacy script about frontpage in that file as well:# -FrontPage-

<Limit GET POST>

deny from all
allow from all

<Limit PUT DELETE>

deny from all
</Limit>Is there anything here I should delete?

In reply to: Installing upgradesISP allowed me to set up new database
I installed thenew wp 2.3.3 and changed the folder name to avoid
confusion with the old WordPress folder with faulty attachment to the old database.
Open up new wp-config-sample.php and changed to wp-config.php
entered the new database name.
entered the new db login & passWent back to the readme.html
Opened /wp-admin/install.php in the browser. Could see some setup activity on bottombar — I assume it was setting up the tables needed for the blog. Nothing happened
GOT: “If there is an error, double check your wp-config.php file, and try again. If it fails again, please go to the support forums with as much data as you can gather.”
Double checked the config.php
Went to PhpMyAdmin.
found this: “wbjv_db (0) “
“No tables found in database.”“MySQL client version: 4.1.20”
It looks as if the install.php cannot access the database if I do the install via ftp.

In reply to: Installing upgradesRegarding multiple databases, I can’t run the installation from new versions of WP that I have uploaded via FTP. Nothing happens.
I seem only able to install the buggy old WP version that displays posts in backwards order (oldest on top; newest at the bottom of the page).

In reply to: Installing upgradesI can’t start a new blog to test. Only one database allowed by the ISP and it is in use by another Ap. (The blog that can’t find it). I tried to use PhpMyAdmin one more time to join the db and the blog URL, but that just doesn’t work.
If I call the ISP tech guy one more time, he’ll probably scream at me before I get a chance to scream at him about this mess.

In reply to: Installing upgradesI stayed up until 2:30 messing with this and I was just so tired and fed-up with the whole thing. It just doesn’t make any sense.
I used a standard ftp program to install the WP 2.3.2 files. I believe that the last time I tried to use Plesk to install the upgrade, it didn’t work that way either, but I might try again. I can view plain html files in the WordPress folder, but I can’t view any php files—for example, readme.html opens, but the links don’t work.
Yeah, index.php should load the header (and all) but it doesn’t.
and I can’t get an admin login screen either. I can’t open any php in the browser (except in source view).I guess I have to do a new install via ftp and start a new blog. If that doesn’t work then I’ll try doing the same install from scratch using Plesk. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to assume that the ISP/Plesk is messing this up. I can get WP installed from the Aps directory, but its that old backwards-broken version of WP.
The local host told me Id have to go get the upgrade (myself), but that doesn’t seem to work worth pish.llprice

In reply to: Installing upgradesI went into the ftp folder WordPress. I deleted all of the old files, I added all of the new ones from 2.3.2 folder I check and double checked the information in a wp_config.php file was correct. I deleted everthing in cache. no plugins on.
Still I get this message from my browser “Safari can’t open the page “https://rwbjv.org/WordPress/” because it could not load any data from this location.” Opera won’t open, Firefox won’t open. NOTHING. I can’t login, I can’t see squat other than readme that goes nowhere.
Nothing opens. It’s like NOTHING IS THERE! I don’t have time for this! I’ve tried to reconnect my database with my folder before with no results. Is this some sort of evil Plesk trick?
What is going ON!!!

In reply to: Can see blog, can’t login. What did I do?I looked at another blog I write to, but don’t admin. The wp-config.php files are different:
// ** MySQL settings ** //
define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘mydomain_news’); // The name of the database
define(‘DB_USER’, ‘mylogin’); // Your MySQL username
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘mypassword’); // …and password
define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’); // 99% chance you won’t …And then this:
//define(‘DB_NAME’, ”); // The name of the database
//define(‘DB_USER’, ”); // Your MySQL username
//define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ”); // …and password
//define(‘DB_HOST’, ”); // 99% chance you won’t need to
change this value// You can have … yada, yada.
Probably different versions of WP, but is this second (commented) part neccessary or is it a problem? lp

In reply to: Can see blog, can’t login. What did I do?Thanks. Never a DB; okay. I had the sysop reinstall a backup of the site. I went in and checked with phpMyAdmin, and both siteurl and home have the https://mydomain.org/news (no closing slash).
I emptied the cache.
No site. No login (I tried https://mydomain.org/news/wp-login.php)
So. I was going to replace the current static site with the WP site Tues. It had four “launch” messages, not a long history.
Would it be faster/easier to save my css and images, delete the whole WP folder, then reinstall with the new update and start over?What’s the looping issue? Could other links with php cause the problem?

In reply to: Can see blog, can’t login. What did I do?Hello Moshu,
I didn’t see your link right away. I did follow the tutorial. The step by step instructions were missing one tiny little piece of information I seem to need. I hate provoking rants, even when I deserve it, but I’m rather in a bind.
The tutorial walked me through the screens, but I must be typing in the wrong “options_value.”
“Submoto’s” example uses a datebase named tamba2o_guides. at https://www.tamba2.org in a folder “wordpress”
The sample field input was: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/guides
domain–> folder—> db name sans domain & hypen?
I tried https://www.mydomain.org/news/news
https://mydomain.org/news/news
https://www.mydomain.org/news
and https://mydomain.org/newsThe cache is empty; the page doesn’t load.
Clearly, I’m a ponytailer and not a sysop; in fact, I’ve never been allowed behind the curtain much, so this soujourn is into a bit of a strange and terrifying world.With trembling and obsequience,

In reply to: Can see blog, can’t login. What did I do?Yep, I should have logged in to WP. I didn’t intend to change any of those files in the directory — and the datestamp information doesn’t show that I changed the ones I looked at, but now I can’t login, so I’m not sure what to do next.
Any suggestions?Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Sidebar content noshow in Windows IE and FirefoxThanks Moshu,
I looked through a few “IE sidebar” but didn’t do “down.”

In reply to: Posts like “?p=18” are generated without backgound imageHello alphaoide and Kafkaesqui,
Okay, I think I see the line that needs to be replaced — in the header! Now it’s coming back to me. Change images in the header in Kurbrik — I read that last summer, but forgot. I’m guessing these are the lines that are of interest:
#page { background: url(“<?php bloginfo(‘stylesheet_directory’); ?>/images/artbg.gif”) repeat-y top; border: none; }
<?php } else { // No sidebar ?>
#page { background: url(“<?php bloginfo(‘stylesheet_directory’); ?>/images/”) no-repeat top; border: none; }I need to add “artbg.gif” after the “/images/” in the second line. I’m guessing I need to replace the “no-repeat” with the “repeat-y top string as well.
Back when I set this up, I used FTP to make alterations. That login changed when the other party took over the news. As I recall, I can’t edit in the theme editor either. I have to wait until Monday, when the sysop can give me a new pass.
Or is there some way to make changes through the dashboard?
Thanks guys.

In reply to: Posts like “?p=18” are generated without backgound imageHello Kafkaesqui,
Now that I’ve had my morning coffee, I realize that I need just a bit more information. I did notice, in the source, that the WP generated “post” pages did NOT have that background image
like the main pages.What I didn’t see (and don’t know), is where I can change the code or markup to make that background image automatically appear in each post page, as it is generated, when I post a new message.
Thanks for your help.
