I tried this out and your fix works beautifully. I discovered later that one of the plug-ins on the home page (UberGrid) was causing the problem because when disabled the b/g images restored. I have written to the developer of Ubergrid to see if he can modify the Plugin to remove the problem. Otherwise I will implement your solution.

Hi Alan – Thanks for your quick response. I have just reposted on the MaxGalleria support forum and hope you can help us there.

I experienced the same issue “There has been a critical error on your website.” after updating plugins following the upgrade to WordPress 5.3.2. We were running Sydney 1.55 and Sydney Toolbox 1.05.
It’s easy to fall into this trap, because the first thing you see on the admin console is the button to update all plugins. Theme updates are flagged way down the page. If you update the plugins first, then the whole website crashes, including the admin console.
The way to avoid this issue is to first update the Sydeny Theme to 1.59, and only then to update the plugin.
It would have been a good idea if aThemes had alerted Sydney users in advance of this important workaround, so that this problem could be easily avoided.
