In reply to: WP-Cron out of controlI hope I’m wrong, but I cannot find any indication that WordPress developers care about this widespread problem of wp-cron.php overload. Perhaps they’re on powerful servers, so it doesn’t bother them.
I’m thinking of renaming to wp-cron0.php and then calling it occasionally with a cron job. I don’t know yet what the appropriate “occasionally” would be.

In reply to: CPU overloadAll I can say is, me, too! I have two WP sites on this one server account, and they are constructed almost identically. One is experiencing the overload, and one is not.
Evidently there is no knowledgeable person on here who can help us!

This occurred with the automatic update done inside the admin section, so I presume it did not use the nightly build.

In reply to: Failed to send trackbacksIt looks like nobody knows or cares about this problem, since the above was posted six months ago.
Too bad, I just tried sending from my 2.8.3 (with patch) blog my very first trackback in hopes of getting a link to my site. The other site posts trackbacks, and it looks like mine didn’t make it, even though the Post edit shows this:
Already pinged:

In reply to: How to Change “Just another WordPress blog” in FilesArrrgh! I was searching for “WordPress blog“!
Anyway, thank you very much for the response. I found the file (wp-admin/includes/schema.php), and I see a bunch of other things I want to change from the defaults.

In reply to: Error Establishing a Database ConnectionI read all of the stuff above, confirmed that my wp-config.php was correct (it was), and then discovered that the “delete user in cpanel and re-create” was the fix needed. Strange.

In reply to: Possible to Have Some Category Posts with Different URL from Others?I used the close brace I took out of the first snippet. [grin]
Now the changes work perfectly and the special category appears only on the designated page.
Thank you very much for your help.

In reply to: Possible to Have Some Category Posts with Different URL from Others?I just set up a new page to receive the special posts, and it generated a similar error:

In reply to: Possible to Have Some Category Posts with Different URL from Others?I’m back! With the above change, index.php generated this error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/crsblog/public_html/wp-content/themes/CRS/index.php on line 42I see there’s an open brace and no close brace; is that it?
I don’t know PHP, although I’m not afraid to mess it up.

In reply to: Suggestions on simple photo galleryI tried plogger a while back and here are my notes:
plogger: nice, because you can have groups within groups. But thumbnail captions highly truncated. Actual installation produced a bunch of “bugs.”There might be a newer version that addresses these issues. I’m looking for a gallery plugin and not having much success with Google.

In reply to: WordPress Elite? Anyone Used It? Alternatives?\blockquote\Also, wordpress is officially billed as a publishing system, not just a blog. There are many CMS-style plugins for WP, such as “static frontpage.”
At any rate, I’m using it as a CMS and a simple “you shouldn’t be doing that” isn’t very helpful.\blockquote\
I’m new on the forum; what the heck are backticks? I know slashes, brackets, and braces, but I never head of these.
Anyway, I’m very interested in building CMS-style blogs. Can you point me in the direction to get a good start?
And to get on-topic, I purchased WP Elite, because I have quite a number of blogs to manage. I soon requested a refund, because it seems that if you set a blog up right in the first place, WP Elite isn’t going to have much to do.
Finally to go off-topic again. I would to be able to customize my installs much than I am now. I would like all of my options already selected in the files I upload. I searched the forums, but was not able to find any help for this.

In reply to: How remove the blogrollSomeone else suggested a fix that really appealed to me since I install WP manually. You can easily find the section in install.php that creates the blogroll and delete it. Then you’ll never have to fiddle with it again.
I also found it easy to change the first post and comment, and well as the default category.
