I have been working with Webmatrix the past couple of days and so far no snags at all. MUCH fewer headaches than with XAMPP, and it does everything that I needed XAMPP to do. So even though I never figured out my XAMPP problem, I am going to mark this thread Resolved. My suggestion to anyone who runs into the same problem (and I know I have not been the only one) and finds this thread: just dump XAMPP and get Webmatrix!

In working with the site files I found several ways to remove the content of the right sidebar (third column) but I still cannot get the remaining sidebar (second column) to lie flush right. The empty space left by the third column will not go away. I really need a two-column layout, but cannot find where that third column is defined or how to remove it. I tried setting all the sidebar-right width values to zero, but that empty space still stays there. Is a two-column layout possible with this theme? I will be grateful for any help.

Thanks – I thought it meant something like that. But I have done those steps over so many times, I made sure to set global privileges for the user, I even followed a sequence to add an administrative user, but still always got the same result. There must be a step missing in those tutorials somewhere. In the meantime I tried a different way, installing WordPress on Microsoft Webmatrix, and it is going MUCH more smoothly. I think the Webmatrix method may work, which will save me the trouble of starting the XAMPP method from scratch yet again. But not a total waste – I did learn quite a bit about phpMyAdmin along the way, which may come in handy for my real installation some day.

Thank you. For some reason even after I entered those details in the subsequent page, the login didn’t recognize it. But taking the additional steps in that link I found fixed that part.

But now I have another problem – is this the right place to ask about it? I can log into the local WP installation and upload new themes. However, I cannot publish pages. Instead of Publish the button says Submit for Review, and the page goes nowhere. I have scoured the forums for answers to this, and what I have found was either ineffective, incomprehensible, or both. Can anyone help me diagnose the problem? Thanks.

Well I spent the whole night googling, and I found (unexpectedly) a link that solved the problem:
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-an-admin-user-to-the-wordpress-database-via-mysql/

I had to use phpMyAdmin to enter user information into the database. The instructions were rather involved but they did the trick. NONE of the tutorials I consulted for installing WordPress on XAMPP mentioned any of this. Why doesn’t the WordPress installation process take care of this automatically? It seems the database must contain this user info or you can’t log in – and the WordPress installation process doesn’t put it there.

Thanks. I took those steps, and exactly the same thing happened. After the installation, instead of the WordPress welcome screen all I see is the WordPress icon (a big white “W” inside a circle with a blue background and an embedded link to www.remarpro.com) and just below a horizontal white bar with nothing in it. No text at all on the page. In the address bar is the following:
    https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php?step=2

I go to the login screen, try the username and password I just used in the installation process, and it still says invalid username.

PS: In the screenshot you provided, I assume the site title is arbitrary?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I entered the same username and password during the WordPress installation, but it still doesn’t recognize it. Is there any way to access it?

    Yes! It worked!

Thank you very much, and thank you for making me aware of the Hashi forum.
