In reply to: How to have picture on the side?I don’t think it’s a plugin as much as it’s using custom queries and code to pull the image out to a thumbnail position.
I would LOVE for someone to prove me wrong and link up to a plugin, but in terms of speaking from experience, I paid a pretty penny to outsource that for a client of mine when I was building their site.

In reply to: strange permalink styleWing4bee – I’d be upset if I read that over there too. But I’d also direct my upset where it was best deserved.
iblastoff was stating an opinion about the permalinks – it’s beyond ME as to why you’d want them that way too. but that’s not entirely the issue here at this point.
For what it’s worth – regarding the site you’re looking to mimic – it IS a spammy, garbage kind of site, regardless of what software powers it. So to add my two-cents to the whole thing (because I’m hoping it helps you, somehow), if you want to learn PHP, find a good, high-quality way to do so. Trying to learn from garbage will only result in you producing more garbage. And the internet landfills are full enough of it as it is! ??

In reply to: strange permalink styleWing4bee – I haven’t seen anyone being rude, hasty, or nasty to you in any way.
Just so you know, what I’m about to say is none of those things either.
Whooami is right – it’s not WordPress, that’s been determined. So that should mean that the discussion is over. You don’t keep going to try to figure it out here, once it’s been determined that it’s not WordPress.
Since you’re new – you might want to take some of what’s being said, and instead of getting upset, just understand, and learn from it.
This may well be your first post, but whooami has thousands under her belt. She wasn’t trying to hurt your feelings, but rather explain that you’re looking for the info you want in the wrong place. That’s it. Nothing deeper in those words. Instead of getting upset and calling names, why not just say “thanks” and go find the info elsewhere, again, as has been suggested?
Oh, and for what it’s worth… bumping your post with all those dots isn’t going to do anything for your cause either.
Again – this was not meant to be mean, hasty, nasty, rude, or whatever. You said yourself you’re new, I’m trying to help you understand, okay?

In reply to: Disable Comments (Due To Spam)If you’re really sure you’re never going to want comments, anywhere, on anything (or that if you change your mind, you’ll know what to do), you can go into the theme you’re using, and delete the call for the comments section in your index.php, single.php, page.php, etc.
If the call isn’t there, they won’t show, and you won’t have to go through a ton of past posts to change them individually, it’ll just get rid of whatever’s there, and prevent anyone from adding any in the future.
Just make sure you know what you’re doing/deleting… make backups of the files, just in case you accidentally break anything.
Gary – trackbacks are created when someone links to your post – they don’t “get into the database” beyond your allowance, rather in order to prevent them from showing up you have to disable everything, and remove the call to post the trackbacks as well as comments entirely.
I also agree with Otto about simply using a spam protection plugin like SpamKarma or Akismet. It’ll be far more manageable and won’t alienate people from your blog. It makes sense to allow comments on a blog – that’s part of what a blog is about, interactivity – but if you’re not using WP for that, then I say there’s no harm in removing the call for comments in the theme code. But if that’s what you’re doing, why bother using software at all? You could just use DreamWeaver and write paragraphs… kind of silly, isn’t it?

In reply to: Is it too late for Permalinks?Nope, you can change permalinks at any time, it’s just not recommended to do it all the time, for a multitude of reasons, one being that the search engines will get lost if you go with “pretty” permalinks now, and then change them back later.
Here’s what I use in order to get pretty much what you’re looking for, but without ruining the infrastructure:
/%category%/%postname%/
Just note that some hosting companies will take a few minutes to register these across the board, so if you switch up and then find 404 errors, just wait 10-15 minutes and you should see them all resolve to where they should be.

In reply to: Is veryplaintext TOO plain?Keep us posted with what you wind up with! You never know, if it’s magazine-y enough, people might be wanting to flavor up their own sites with your theme (of course you’ll have to get onto your second before you release the first! lol)

In reply to: CHANGING CATEGORIESYou can add categories and add posts to categories at your any whim… You have to create them, and edit the posts to include them in the category you choose. Once you add one, it will be included in the list on the right hand side when writing/editing.

What plugin? You haven’t given us a name, link, nothing…
What exactly are you trying to find out?Forum: Your WordPress
In reply to: Is veryplaintext TOO plain?Personal opinion – yes, too boring for most sites.
I really think it depends on what you’re trying to achieve with the site. If it’s a repository for info, then by all means keep it simple. But you said you’re doing a “magazine style site” – how many magazines do you pick up off the rack and flip through that have NO images, NO color, NO anything? None.
And I also have an aversion to serif-style fonts. I much prefer sans-serif for reading online. Much cleaner and easier on the eyes IMHO.
I can totally see using VPT to start with, to change around and make more “magazine like”, but no, I sure wouldn’t leave it like that for what it seems like you’re wanting to do. ??
Incidentally, the Bad Dog Theatre site is very well done, again, IMHO!
