thank you rudolf. however going with the single loop did not work. i’ve tried all possibilities from the template tags and query posts suggestions, but none work. i end up with current posts on the left and the category on the right.

the best option seems the index page from the Hemingway theme, but it only works on all posts.

any ideas on how to customise this for the category page, without specifiying a particular category in the code?

I found the answer. Naming would help. I was referring to a tabbed box. the best solution I found is at:

The checked category is actually what I require, I sort my posts based on categories. In 2.0 the default category was always checked. Has this now changed in 2.1?

All my categories are functional. When I select a category and post, it is saved. I can add categories. But when I go to Option > Writing and save the Default Category, it is not there when I make a new post. Otherwise nothing else has been updated since the 2.1 upgrade. in 2.0, the default cateogy was always selected. under Manage > Categories the category is listed as default.
