Woohoo!! Found the solution.
The conflict was with a Chrome extension called Enable Copy 6.1
Removed the extension and full functionality returned.

This is what I have found. Chrome messes with the backend in particular the ability to drag and drop. But works as it should on the frontend.

Edge works great on the backend but makes a lot of the text disappear on the frontend, in particular comments.

Firefox works on both the frontend and the backend. But is a very slow browser.

Incognito works on both the frontend and the backend.

So, yes, I will investigate the browser extensions with Chrome and see what happens.

Thanks @mihai Ceban, that seems to be where the problem lies. I use Chrome as my browser of choice. When I went into Incognito mode, drag and drop worked exactly as it should.
So what do I do now to have a permanent fix?

Docket Cache made no difference sorry. And have already wound back to 3.41.
I’m going to try and replicate the entire website, on a test site, adding plugins and themes bit by bit, and checking NGG after every little change to see what if anything makes a different.
Frustrating and a lot of work ??

I have done as you suggested and it doesn’t help. There appears to be no conflict from other plugins.
Strangely though…. on a test site with just WordPress, the same theme, and NextGEN loaded, everything works as it should.

– Spasalon theme hasn’t been updated since February 2023
– Webriti Companion hasn’t been updated for 6 months.
– Webriti Companion has not been tested with the latest version of WordPress
So, are the theme and plugin no longer supported?

You can downgrade without losing your galleries or settings.
I would definitely recommend going back to 3.41 and waiting until newer updates are made.

Was there ever a solution to this? Because this is now happening to me.

It has been doing the following since I started the backup yesterday.
It says “Generating tree files (0)”
And if you hover over the icons then it displays “Restore files – 14%”

Rolling back to 3.41 has fixed the problem and has provided a safe use of NGG. My understanding is 3.55 has fatal error issues as well.
So what version should I wait for?

Thanks Thomas for your help. You were right. A previous admin had added the additional CSS. Not sure why and removing has restored the textarea as it should be.

Sorry about the confusion. My Country Blocker was inadvertently set to exclude European countries (because the website is targeted for NZ clients)
