  • Mike,

Glad it worked but that raises another question about the WordPress Automatic Upgrades Plugin (WAUP). This plugin has always worked fine for me as well. Must be something to do with your host and permissions thereof (or lack of for that matter). My host offers no restrictions of any kind unless I invoke them myself. Perhaps if I get the time I’ll try to find out what’s up with this but this is the wrong thread for it.

You can also try using the WordPress Automatic Upgrades plugin by Keith Dsouza. It works for most WordPress type folks. If it doesn’t it’s probably the PHP version your host is running (works with PHP 4.4.7, 5.2.4, and 5.2.5 in my personal experience). Otherwise Moshu can definitely help you out.

As a lover and tester of the WordPress platform I’ll agree that although the built-in editor functions reasonably well, it definitely has a learning curve for those new to using it. Most folks are used to using the image insert function via a toolbar button such as any popular word processing program or even email client would have. May not sound like a reasonable excuse to some but in my experience working with WordPress users, this is a common complaint. The built-in editor has never been a “be all, end all” blog writer and does have it’s limitations.

A couple solutions are available though. The first is immediate for Windows users and that’s “Windows Live Writer” which is a local blog editor you install on your computer (just Google it). It requires .Net Framework 2.0 to work but that’s easily downloaded from MS also. It’s an excellent and very popular blog editor. For Apple users I there’s the popular “MarsEdit” program.

The second solution, if you don’t mind waiting that is, is the new TinyMCE editor in WP 2.5 is much improved especially in regards to image uploading, insertion and manipulation. Unfortunately you won’t be seeing this until the release in March of this year but either way, I highly recommend Widows Live Writer irregardless. WordPress now directly supports Writer since version 2.3.1.

    Hope this helps.

Now this is strange. I have no problem with widgets in 2.3.2 in fact this is the first time I’ve heard this complaint since 2.3.2 came out and I’ve upgraded several people to this latest version. Unfortunately I have no idea what might cause this to be broken in your particular cases. Worth looking into though. If I find an answer I’ll post back here.

There’s no database upgrade for 2.3.2 but you might want to use phpMyAdmin to go in and run a “check” on your database tables. This usually shows up any problems you might be having such as the one you describe if it’s DB related. Also, you might try yet another update by downloading 2.3.2 again and making sure you delete the “wp-admin” and the “wp-includes” online directories completely before uploading (via FTP) the new ones you downloaded and extracted. Then you can copy over and overwrite the WordPress root files safely enough since doing it that way won’t affect your “wp-config.php” file.

I don’t mean to be basic here but sometimes a redundancy check is needed just to say you did. I’ve fixed more strange problems with just this sort of thing. ??

    Hey Doncha,

It may sound a bit redundant but with more and more “non-tech” bloggers switching to custom WP installs these days I’ve seen a rather significant push behind the various scenes related to WordPress to start “simplifying and standardizing” things so these types of users have the info right at hand so to speak. Makes sense when seen in the light that the popularity of the WordPress platform is growing by leaps and bounds or at least by significant hops, skips and jumps.

Thanks Otto42. That’s what I usually do but it’s good to confirm. Still, I believe proper upgrade instructions should be included for the non-tech types.

    @hatevalyum,

Is your host happen to be using PHP 5 on your server and if so, what’s the version number? I may have seen the same problem when using WAUP to upgrade a customer’s WP blog who’s server been changed over to PHP 5.2.5. By the way, using the fully automated mode works okay but I recommend using the WordPress Database Backup plugin (just search for it in the plugin directory at WP.org) first to backup your DB as a safety precaution. WAUP hasn’t messed up any upgrade I’ve done and I’ve done many but if your using PHP 5 and see the same problem then the author needs to know pronto.

Considering all your sites are down and you all seem to be hosted with GoDaddy…

I’ve run across a lot several comments lately saying that GoDaddy’s performance has really gone downhill and problems like yours are becoming common place.

Anyway, eremite3 and anyone else who might be thinking of finding a new host I’ll recommend Bluehost. They definitely have the best deal for the money and the best support as well of any shared hosting provider–online forums, Live chat and a 24/7 toll free number. And I’ve put a lot of research into this so I wouldn’t steer anyone wrong and so far everyone I’ve recommended to Bluehost hasn’t complained.

For the average WordPress blogger you can’t beat it.

    Hi Neo,

I just checked your site using both Firefox and IE and it looks okay to me. You got it fixed apparently?

Okay, I checked and that’s all of the error I received and I verified it in the error log (the wp-admin error log that is…root directory error log was clear), no extra errors connected to it. Pluggable.php line 391 ending ?> looks okay…no extra lines after the ending ?> and the beginning of 391 appears okay also.

The code for Aksimet is so vastly different from the previous version I wouldn’t know where to begin. I do appreciate your reply though unfortunately, it’s just as I said previously. The previous version works, the new one does not and it’s the only version of Akismet that I’ve ever had a problem with. I’m afraid I’m not versed enough in PHP to take it any farther myself.

I’m not sure I follow here. 1.7 has always worked for me through 4 different themes in blog online and through different test configurations in my local WP sandbox and it’s never needed any sort of modification. I recently updated to 1.8 and the plugin no longer works and I’m not the only one experiencing this problem. I switched back to 1.7 and the plugin works correctly.

I’m currently running the latest version of K2-unmodified.

Version 1.8 does not work for me either where 1.7 (right out of the box, no modification) has always worked just fine. There are several others in various places in the forum who are also complaining that 1.8 does not work. I even tried installing the code snippet and it still doesn’t work. Went back to 1.7.

I found the same problem. Upgraded to 1.8 and the plugin no longer works. I have version 1.7 if anyone needs it. Wonder if the new author checks the forum at all.

    Hi all,

I didn’t post the fix for a memory exhausted error on that post in my blog. Check out the following link for possible solutions for these type of PHP problems:

    dkaye315,

When I initially talked to Bluehost support they informed me that with every server they switched to PHP 5 they were eliminating PHP 4 from that server.

About the time you called Bluehost they had changed their tune because I called them again around the same time as you did and they said the same thing about the PHP switch.

By the way, the version of PHP that BH is switching to is 5.2.4 which is solid and stable and for anyone who uses Windows Live Writer which wouldn’t publish to anything other than PHP 5.1.6, PHP 5.2.4 is now compatible. I tested WLW out by publishing to a Bluehost WordPress powered blog that was running on PHP 5.2.4 and also to my WordPress Sandbox (XAMPP for Windows w/PHP 5.2.4). No sweat.
