Thanks! I did try that and got into the same issues… SOmething would not write, change permission, breaks WP.

I guess what I need to know is what permissions are best for WP directories and sub directories to be sure things work but not break.

I have been reading up a lot on HEADWAY. I think that’s the way I should go as I am very design and layout minded. Trying to get the blog to look like a website.

And I don’t want whatever this problem is to screw up basic headway theme.

    Thanx, Kicker

Something is happening and I dont know what it is… ??
I can’t get my own child to work, tried yours and cant figure that out.
I change write permissions in FTP and then lose the URL and all the themes. SO bad that not only are there no themes left in ADMIN themes at all, other than some nameless activated one that says nothing but WIDGETS. And then I can’t install any themes at all. I try deleting the themes in FTP and try again and it says success, but there are no themes, and the url has gone dead. Which leads me to believe, like half a dozen times before, WP is now Broken and I have to reinstall it.

    Stuck at the begining! ??

Thanx… I appreciate you taking the time with me.

I spent 5 years layout and design for my blog in SERENDIPITY using DW, FTP and style.css. I can cut and paste php and htaccess enough to get by, and I recently had to move to a unmanaged dedicated server which I am passable with. So I am not the usual newbie. I just cant seem to acclimate to editing the theme and adding templates.

For 2 long days I tried to make a child theme of twentyeleve and it would just not pop up in THEMES. I did a lot of permissions, if I did a 777 on the theme directory the admin screen and the blog would go blank. I left out the UPDATE string so not to mess up having the wrong ../

I added this theme you suggested, activated it, went to editor, clicked on the css and updated. It did not add the twentyeleven code to the style sheet as I expected. So now I don’ know how to change anything, there is nothing there to change?

I am sure once I get past this initial problem of seeing things in a new way things will go much much smoother. But I just can seem to get started. ??

    Thanks for the help.

Thanks, I knew that was the answer, which I did not want to hear. ??
You see, the DB will be in the WP offline blog while the Blog itself with Serendipity is up and running. After I import I will then have to upgrade. And then spend some weeks designing and refining the software that is new to me before I tell the server to switch.
Which means in the meantime hundreds of articles will not make it to the new WP blog.
I think I may know the answer to this one too, which I don’t want to hear either!:)

    Thanx for the reply!
The directions to transfer from Serendipity to WP instruct “add the serendipity.php to the /import directory in WP”. It will then show itself in the IMPORT command in the WP admim screen. From 3.x on there is no longer an /import directory. So I can find no way of getting the file into the list of IMPORT options.

    Thanx again…

    Oh no… ??
I spelled my own domain wrong.
    https://sixtes60s.com/1960music.htm

Thanx for the help! I have kept the 50s, 60s, 70s as separate domains. So I can help PR by having some outside links to each other. ??

As “teaser” I would guess you mean a short blurb with a graphic or thumbnail and a MORE at the bottom?

If I understand you, you think I use it as a blog no matter its static nature, and it best that I have the header with a horz menu of the 10 years with drop down of the 8 categories and then for each category a cluster of articles using the content. As the example I link to MUSIC 1960, that would be articles as MUSIC NEWS, Grammies, Albums, top 40. Some use MORE and some are small enough to use all of? By using MAG theme I can stagger them around which would help the look.

    Thanx again PAE!

    THANK YOU PEREDUR!

    OOPS!

    https://sixites60s.com/1960music.htm

I think one has to visit the page to get the gist of what I am asking.
    The entire site is STATIC.

Is it worth the trouble to move into WP? WIll SEO automation, and comment availability and a redesign help increase traffic?
Can you add comments and social links to pages?

Should my categories – like MUSIC – be pages or sub categories or articles?

I just am not sure where to start with this.

    Thanks

    Thanx esmi
    That was it!

You know there is no .htaccess file there to begin with.
So I created one that now has

    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html index.htm

which fixed the problem!! Hear! Here!

Isn’t there suppose to be some REWRITE code and then the WWW thing too in there?

What does a basic .htaccess for WP look like?

    thanx again esmi

    Two more…
I am running Serendipity blog software on the same server I recently did the SSH PHP upgrade and it reads the php.index file.
I changed permissions for the WP index.php to 776 and no change.
Boy I need to get past this show stopper soon!
    Thanx again!

    Using a Godaddy dedicated server.
I had to go root to do the PHP update required for WP. It seemed to go well.
I have only Godaddy Simple Control Panel.
I can do SSH with PUTTY, but am not all that good at it.
So where can I find DIRECTORY INDEX OPTIONS?

Shouldn’t there be an .htaccess file or something in that SIXTIES directory?

    Thanx…

    (@kicker)

    Yes!
    https://sixties60s.com/sixties/

this is a show stopper for me, right at the gitgo…

    Thread Starter kicker

    (@kicker)

Sorry to be so dense… ??

It says the index.php and the htaccess have to be in the real ROOT.

So do I install the blog into /wordpress, do the month or so of work, and when I am ready for the switch, delete all the HTML crap in the root and THEN follow the directions in the link?

There is no reason I want to keep the root empty, other than keeping the html site going while I work on the WP. So down the line can I change it back to domain/ without the WORDPRESS directory if I want?

    Thread Starter kicker

    (@kicker)

I understand what you are saying.
But what I have gathered in the SEO forums over the years is that it is much better to have everything in or close to the root directory.
What I would want to end up with would be:

    domain/1960
    domain/1961 [ect]

    rather than

    domain/wordpress/1961

Or does this not really matter to SEO as much I have been told?

Or when I am ready to move, can I eliminate the sub directory… Easily? ??

    Thanx Esmi…

I do need another set of eyes to see things differently than I do as I am so used to how it looks. Any advice on theme or how best to navigate?

I was thinking maybe use virtual domains for EACH YEAR under the real domain, and then for each year have the 7 categories, and then mate each little news bit with graphic or video an article?
