Ok, so if I’m understanding correctly, it sounds like the hook I was wondering if you might provide isn’t necessary. During regeneration, you call standard WordPress thumbnail functions (not sure what they are but assume they are documented) and WP provides hooks to those, so one just needs to plug into the normal WP hooks to do the custom thumbnail logic and that will work on initial thumb creation and when your plugin is run. Is that right? Thanks!

Sure enough. I tried on my live site and it worked fine. My local install must be messed up somehow. Thanks!

Thanks for the note and effort, but the fix doesn’t seem to work for me. I upgraded to 3.0.2 and tried running the regeneration and I get the same message:

Skipped Attachment ID 489 (櫻井麻美): The fullsize image file cannot be found in your uploads directory at 2018/01/櫻井麻美.jpg. Without it, new thumbnail images can’t be generated.

I thought maybe it was that it would only work going forward (i.e. something was messed up with the database entry for the existing image) so I tried uploading from scratch and that was even worse. Two issues: (1) the image gets uploaded to the library but the thumbnail is missing when viewed from the media library page; and (2) thumbnails are created on upload and are visible on disk but they are named with really weird file names (they look like they are using some other text encoding). I called the new file 櫻井麻美櫻井麻美.jpg and the file names on disk all say ????o?éo????????o?éo????.jpg.

Awesome, thanks for the update. If you’d like me to test a fix, just let me know.

I updated my review to 4 stars based on the above comment from the author – assuming I see updates go smoothly when I use on a different site (where I don’t have the free site registration done) it will likely get bumped to five stars… it really is a very nice plugin.
