If you are new to wordpress, I recommend to install it locally first!
You can hide your site, but experiment on productive server, where everybody could see it is not the best way.

If your Theme is supporting this functionality, to can change it in design settings.
If not you need to adapt the css (stylesheet). Whithin the stylesheet you can define the color, hover and so on
Do you mean by banner the slider?
