Its actually very simple. You just need to upload an image that’s wider than the div x1 width (which is around 290px), then it will automatically change the width of the post to div x2. So I uploaded an image that was about 615px. For articles that had only text, but I wanted the div x2 size, I uploaded a blank image that was 615px X 1px.
So there’s no need to change any coding, I think the original developer had it mind to make it simpler for us. Although I think it was ‘lost in translation’.
