Not sure what had gone wrong, but I wasn’t seeing all the options under Membership 2 in the menu. I was able to redo the setup and it has worked.

No, basically, because the main site is on subdomain1.domain.com when I create a second site, WP wants it to be subdomain2.subdomain1.domain.com so I edit the site to be subdomain2.domain.com and use the domain mapping tool to map the domain name to site id 2.

Am I doing it wrong?

Did you ever find a solution to your problem?

I too need it to redirect the user to the blog, as opposed to the profile page.

You have probably found this by now, but I have found a plugin to take care of the redirect.
