Thanks for the info. Could you provide any detail as to what your hosting provided did to fix the problem?

I am having several issues at the moment, and I am sure they are related.

Besides WordFence not activating, I have a Twitter widget that will not authenticate and have tried two Google analytic plug-ins that will not authenticate. Interestingly, these plug-ins work on another site I have hosted with the same provider. There is something specific to this one site, and the problems persist even with a standard theme.

I have worked with the developer of my custom theme, but they cannot track down the issue (which doesn’t seem to be caused by their theme). My provider simply tells me that other WP sites on his server (including my own) work just fine.

I have no idea where to start. We thought problems might be with some permissions on the wp-admin folder, but changing that didn’t seem to fix anything.

It been very frustrating. My provider is very accommodating… but I don’t know the right questions to ask.

    Follow-up…

Since the entire website was down anyway, I decided to try a manual install. I followed the “simple” directions in the link and was able to do so.

For whatever reason, that solved my problem. Everything seems to be working again.

I was also concerned that two separate attempts to upgrade went so horribly wrong. The first generated a “fatal error” which locked me out of the admin area. Second attempt resulted in a similar fatal error on both admin and complete site.

Removal of plug ins and 3rd party themes had no affect on either problem (other than to slightly change the “fatal error” details).

Something is so broken that replacement of all files with original backup copies still has the site generating a blank page. (Although I can accesss all admin functions)

That post was my first stop before posting here. I tried all items on the list, except the manual install.

I was using a custom theme that took quite a bit of effort to set up. I am very concerned about losing content and needing to rebuild the entire site.

If I keep the content directory and one file (as described in the link you posted) will all my prior content, preferences and other theme set up info be protected?
