I went ahead and completed the installation manually (SQL into the Database), so we can consider this no longer relevant.

The solution was to change links to “Plain” under Settings->Permalinks (wp-admin/options-permalink.php), which gave me a working site; and then to change them back to the Post Name setting which I had before.

It fails at “Step 1 of 4” with “server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration …. 500 Internal Server Error.”

I can’t find a PHP log, but the installer-log.txt goes as far as the following and then stops
