Alright, what I did so far is to use the suggestion of another user on that topicc:

@sacredpath suggested to just display posts with specific categories based on css:

.blog .site-content .hentry {
  display: none;
}
.blog .site-content .hentry.category-sud-america {
  display: block;
}

which has the disadvantage of not beeing able fill up all blocks within the frontpage seen from a desktop client.

Any other helpful ideas?

But can someone please still give me input on how I might be able to only
show some categories or tags on the home/start page?

no it’s not the featured content I wanted to achieve.
I would like the startpage to only display my picture posts (squared tiles)
and another page, like the blog page, which shows a list of blog posts, yes.
Is it possible to use another theme just for the blog page?
I don’t think so, right? If that’s not possible I would stay with that theme and rather use the square’s.
