In reply to: learning wordpressThanks for your ideas. I just subscribed to all of the mailing lists.
I found the book I needed at the library, “HTML & XHTML” (O’Reilly). My problem was not wordpress knowledge, but changes to HTML and XHTML, since I retired in 2000. I used to teach web design. Those changes were just being discussed when I retired.I was a computer pioneer 50 years ago. My thesis was about the early hackers. I ended my career as dept chair of computer science for the last 5 years. I taught all of the languages and web design. I still maintain web sites for friends. I use native HTML.

Forum: Themes and Templates
In reply to: Adding a themeI had loaded a blank style.css, but just to be sure, I uploaded the default style.css. No change. So I entered a URL to check that my theme folder was in the right place. Only the default/classic themes were in the theme folder.
I contacted my server support people. They found that I had missed part of the directory structure when I created the folder. They moved it to the right place and the theme is working. My server support people are great (hostrocket.com)
How do I indicate that a problem is resolved, or does someone else do that?

Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: changed footer.php – now no sidebarI fixed my sidebar problem. It was the RSS widget. I don’t know how I messed up just by clicking on ADD for the widget.
When I clicked on REMOVE for the RSS widget, I didn’t know that I also had to click on SAVE CHANGES. When I clicked on both REMOVE and SAVE CHANGES, my sidebar came back.
At first, the sidebar was above the header because I had added get sidebar to the header template at the beginning.

In reply to: changed footer.php – now no sidebarI tried to remove RSS widget several times. It keeps coming back according to the wp-admin page.
I can’t download the theme. I am using the default theme. I get the same result (no sidebar) when I switch to the classic theme.
I just added firebug to firefox. I don’t see that it is showing anything wrong, but I don’t know how to use firebug.
I am just playing around with modifying the code in different templates to get a sidebar. I am just experimenting to learn all I can. I want to become a wordpress guru. I am learning.jim
