Nup, for me it was their last name not their username.

Solution was to just delete the apostrophe. So they’re not as Irish any more but at least they can use the site.

Yep, I’ve installed and used that plugin as well.

Funny Story: The issue was only happening with one user, then it happened with another. The first one’s surname was “O’brien” and the 2nd was “O’leary”.

It was the apostrophe in their names. For whatever reason, WordPress User Interface doesn’t do an “escape” on the character in their name.

Anyway, fixed. Watch out for those Irish names folks!

Sounds like there’s no real fix for it other than the flockshoot approach of locking everything down and then removing the malicious code.

If you do a quick cruise through the code, I bet you’ll find some malicious code inside your PHP tags that checks for search engine referrals and then sends you to a site that downloads and installs an Exploit Pack.

Google the crap out of all of that, and hopefully you’ll find newer and better fixes than mine (which you should find too).

They nailed all my sites too, middle of January and again in Feb. I’ve changed all my passwords and one of my webhosts buttoned down FTP to SFTP and they haven’t been back (yet).

I made a fix script you can find on my website https://www.jexanalytics.com if you’re interested, but it’s Use At Your Own Risk and may not work if you don’t have “write” privileges.

I’ve had a Google Alert set for “wordpress hacked” and have seen more and more people talking about it, so it seems there’s no common theme other than a WordPress site was somehow involved (almost all mine were updated and I had no timthumb).

The best advice so far, is to clean things out, reset all the passwords, and go for tighter FTP security where you can.

SAME! On Jan 28, then the sunsabeeches came back on 5th Feb.

The put a cURL request in there to download an Exploit Pack and zap your machine with a million viruses/trojans.

I have pretty good security by practice, and this thing his every site I have/run on 3 different servers in 2 different countries. The only common thread they had was WordPress on Apache.

I’ve set up a Google Alert for this thing (which is how I found this thread) and this came up to: https://discussion.dreamhost.com/thread-134262-page-4.html

While I know that this isn’t a WordPress targeted attack, they did seem to know to change anything footer.php, home.php in addition to index.php.

I’ve written a quick cleaner script that you can get off my website, but you have to have all files writeable for it to work, so it doesn’t always get ’em.

Other than that, I’ve just been waiting around for somebody to write some sort of article on how to fix this and then how they found and punished the crap outta the bad guys.

I’m having the same issue too, with the line:
Importing attachment https://christianfletcher.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/p104d.jpg… Remote file error: Remote server did not respond

Even though that path serves the image. I also tried a mass search & replace where I switched “christianfletcher.files.wordpress.com/” with “”christianfletcher.wordpress.com/files/” and that didn’t work either.

I can find nothing online for this other than other people with the same issue, so any help is sincerely appreciated.

Sadly, it doesn’t matter what the function is, as even if I make it one line of “echo ‘ok’;” it still doesn’t work.
