Dear Steve,

I fully understand your point of view. It is a bit much for me to ask you to spend so much time on my little problem.
When I start to customize twentythirteen I had no idea how deep my feet were going to get in the treacle. I have been a bit too ambitious I think.

Thank you ever so much for all your help and believe it or not, I have learnt a lot from you.

I will do as you say and keep tweaking. Hopefully I will happen on where that navbar background is defined.

I’m ready now to start producing my content as actually I will have finished with this last problem – which of course you had no way of telling.

Thank you again Steve. You have already marked this entry as resolved – so I am done.

I am in awe of how much time you have spent on this problem for me.

Best regards

John

Thanks for swift reply

I have had SOME success

I set .main-navigation min height from 45 to 24 (pixel size of search icon)

I altered the .site-header .search-field { height 37px to 24px

the search field height is now 24px
BUT
the 40px offending #F7F5E7 background is still showing as about 40px

i noted that you said:
The search box on the right has a bunch of height to it.
Have I only done half the job or is something else wrong?

my updated current child theme is at <a href=”https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa”

thanks fgor helping

my last apparent problem is this:

The nav menu has a background area of about 40px’s in height – I want to reduce the height to about half this (20px) and I want every submenu item to also show in a background area of 20px too

however after endless investigation I fail to see where the height of the background is defined
my current child theme is at <a href=”https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa”

I know i should have found it by now but I cannot.

I know this post is a little old but PLEASE help

thanks for reading

I have altered my child style.csss at:<a href=”https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa”

Sorry Rajan V,
I obviously did not make myself clear

I enclose y style.css child at https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa

and a partial screenshot of retrobrain.co.uk at https://goo.gl/photos/L4bFf6qA24Zs5zxt9

What I desire is the black buttons dropdown menu to be shunted together (with no spaces between)
BUT without altering the button dimensions

Maybe it cannot be done in this theme – I do not know

any more info needed please ask
Thanks

Addendum to previous post.
I don’t think i made myself clear enough.

I removed the code Rajan V sent me, to show the site how it was before I applied it.

The sub-menu buttons are now half the height of the main nav menu purple buttons. Thats the height i want the black sub-menu buttons to retain. What I want to achieve is to have those black sub-menu buttons “shunted” up against one another. I do not see how I can do this.

Could someone help please help me?

thanks

Dear Rajan V,

Thanks for such a prompt reply.

That removed any space between the sub-menu buttons that I asked for BUT

I also wanted the size of those sub-menu buttons to stay as I had them. They are too big now.

Ungrateful of me I know but can this be fixed?

Best regards

with thanks

I find Octal permission permissions so much easier to understand and this has now given me a list of the permissions in that directory

Peruse them:

I noted /htdocs had permissions of 755 which is correct

However: before investigating too much i changed the htdocs folder from 755 to 777 (not to be recommended in nearly all events)
THUS:
$ cd lampp

$ sudo chmod -R 777 /htdocs

Then ran the installer.php file again

The process completed successfully

SO this solved the problem for me PROBLEM SOLVED (for me)

database created ok

NOTE: IMPORTANT: if you use this method then take the time to change /htdocs permissions back to 755 – SAFETY first

Dear Dave,

Thanks for all your help

in the end I didn’t try !Important as I could not see how to use it as i had removed most of the color entries in the nav menu definitions BUT you did make me think thru my problem again!
SO I reinstated the background-color entries for #db572f & #220E10 and replaced the color with TRANSPARENT. Voila! I got what i wanted the menu buttons now sit on the page without any background black or orange panels.

You have helped me SO much and helped me “see” a little more of how things work.

my best regards

Hello

I have been experimenting and trying to explore the theme – I realise that the STYLE.cc does not set the area i want to alter
color 220e10 appears to be a default from somewhere

What I need is help to change in my child theme – what do I need to do?

I have tried but removing all references of 220e10 in style.css still will not result in the black background areas being removed from my navigation menu or from my drop-down menu buttons

I know I am not the only person needing help and i’m sure you need time for yourself but I would appreciate some help with this.

thanks for prompt reply Steve,

right lets hope I got close this time

altered child style.css as in https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa
(I added navigation a: hover part from parent theme and altered it

BUT surprise it changed nothing so I haven’t got it right yet?

how close am I?

best regards

(@jevans17)

Dear Steve,

I Am confused now probably because you know what you are talking about

I have looked at your reply

you seem to be referring to :

.nav-menu li:hover > a,
.nav-menu li a:hover,
.nav-menu li:focus > a,
.nav-menu li a:focus {
background-color: #220e10;
color: #fff;
}

am I correct?

I see the background colour is 220e10 (Black)

altering this seems to do nothing so I must be totally wrong here

could you elucidate further please

thanks

https://www.retrobrain.co.uk

using twentythirteen

updated style.css child here : https://codepen.io/jevans17/pen/WGkRVa

when the mouse hovers over the menu buttons a black background block appears (hovering over the “retro computing” button produces that orange color!)

what I want to achieve:
I want to make those backgrounds disappear. Preferably I would like the menu buttons appear to sit on whatever the page is showing. (if you understand what I mean)

Whatever I try anything, nothing changes. The black backgrounds remain.( I might add here that I no longer think i’m as clever as I once did)

All I want to do is get the menu system working as I want, so that I can commence adding content.

can someone help

thanks

Thanks Steve,

menu button now working as I intended. As you surmised I did not realise the significence of background and background-color.
I have a couple of things to tweak regarding the nav menu so please don’t close this for a couple of days. I want to have a go myself before screaming for help.

thank you so much again.
