This happened to me too, but this problem was fixed it seems in a recent update. I don’t get a darkened image anymore.
To fix this all you have to do is set the:
Watermark transparency / opacity 0-100 Enter a number ranging from 0 to 100. 0 makes watermark image completely transparent, 100 shows it as is.
setting to any number that is BELOW 100. Then it will work [:
