Ahaa….. just found a wp_sql file in my trash… think I binned it when I was having such problems with Mamp and was trying to uninstall Mamp.

So, I’ve imported that to a new data-base in my phpmyadmin – it imported 11 wp_ files – does that sound about right….? Should i off created a table first please for example?

There are more wp_squl files in the trash for me to retrive and try if this is not the one…!!!

And I wondered how I then proceed with the files in the HTDocs folder that I saved – do I add that to the new install of WordPress – in the same HTdocs file or elsewhere…???

Or maybe I’m jumping ahead here..?

Yes I did export it to a file, followed the WP instructions on how to back up to do so and just allowed the backup file name template to be used – the (stupid) thing is I do not recall what the file was called – have looked at the SQL database instructions to back-up and try and remind myself – see that the post fix seems to be _db_ So have done a search on my hard-drive for files with _db_ – and there are lots of files that come up, but none with that post fix per se…!

I just recall having an option to save an export as a zipped file – which is why I’ve got this zipped HTDocs folder on my desktop.

Sorry about the lack of clarity here – on a steep learning curve.

Thank you – do you mean it remains in PHPmyadmin – or is exported to my hard-drive….?

I’ve made a few attempts to import the zipped HTDocs folder from my desktop that I thought was the export, into the phpmyadmin – having created a new data-base – it doesn’t seem to be successful!

I did back it up – several times as I tried to make a child theme and so on.. but am uncertain where it is/how to re-instate it into the PHPMyAdmin.

Thanks for the link – I’ve just seen the Link button would of helped me there too!

Thanks you for your reply, and forgive my vagueness! Starting out with this and a bit overwhelmed – have spent hours trying to resolve it and pleased that – with the help of you and others on the forums – I have created a network but now hope to reinstate the WP theme and files for original WP single site that I created.

To recap – created a single site – then tried to install network site on the same installation – using MAMP, local host. This backfired on me – whereby I couldn’t see my original blog page – sorry it was over a week ago (I did post on the forum about it – unsure how to add link to it, sorry) the error messages were as below:
When I tried to preview my current blog = ‘not found on the server’ or when I clicked on it in the dashboard an error message saying ‘Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.’

This plus MAMP problems meant that I finally uninstalled all and reinstalled all again, but not before saving the
HTDDOC’s folder (containging all the WP files for this blog) – and backed-up (exported) the database (could this be a zipped HTDOC’s folder by the way??) to my computer.

So now I have created network and installed a new WP (again with the invaluable guidance of other posts on this forum) and would like to somehow install my single site settings/WP files so that I can ressurect that blog as a sub-domain site and create another blog in the ‘primary site’.

I did try installing the saved WP files into the new install’s HTDOC’s folder originally – this does not seem to have resolved much, though the themes I saved in the original site are availble on this new mult-site/network – though as yet not my much modified (and cherished!)) blog. Unless I’m looking in the wrong place/ not doing something simple I could do to retrieve the modified files and upload the single site to the network…

The original Database will of been lost when I uninstalled MAMP I guess? I’ve checked on MAMP, PHPMyAdmin – the new Database is there – with 26 files – 9 of which have the pre-fix Wp_2 – the remaining 17 are just Wp files. If that casts any light???

Sorry this is such a long explanation – with perhaps not enough technical information…
I really hope it helps you understand where I”m at.

Lastly – I am in a quandry about sites and domains and getting that all going at the moment too. Getting an error message when I try and access 2nd site page (that I thought I’d created – but actually it’s not showing up in the Network Dasboard – just that I have one site and one user)
Error message: The requested URL /janursamajor was not found on this server.
    Apache/2.0.64 (Unix) PHP/5.3.5 DAV/2 Server at localhost Port 80
    2

So as not to confuse, think I’d better leave that question for a new post though, and concentrate on the question of the current post.

Thank you – please bear with me re: not enough for technical info and feel free to ask for more!

@sparklogix – sorry, my situation is still unresolved – in the end I’ve resinstalled Mamp and WordPresss and am starting from scratch….
however, I’d like to look into what you have flagged up as a problem – it may of been what caused my site to no longer work too..
I cannot view the .httaccess file on my Mac – though I’ve created and saved it in Textedit. Can you cast light on how to view a .hattaccess file please?

    Thanks.

Thanks – I’m not sure how to lose the 80 – any advice would be appreciated. Aggh – it all seems to be grinding to a halt, I’m now not able to start Mamp up at all on my Mac – when I try to start the Mamp servers the MYSQUL server comes on automaticaly, but not the Apache – then I click start servers and the MYSQUL server light goes red too…

Unsure why this has happened since last night when all were still working ok. Although this a.m have tried fiddling a bit with the installation as per another guy’s instructions to see if I can get Network working, but undid all his suggestions after I couldn’t start MAMP anyway.

    Have since tried typing:
killall -9 mysqld into the Terminal – this has worked in the past when MAMP has been tempremental… but no luck this time. Instead now get this error message in Terminal.

No matching processes belonging to you were found

Any comments/pointers much appreciated – thank you.

Incidentally these are my error logs from Apache as per yesterday when not able to view my blog….

Hi, thanks Ipstenu – is it ok to lose the colon then? And did you see my latest post re: 1. and 2. possible reasons why everything’s gone caput?
If so do you think I’m way off mark or could there be some sense in this?

As another afterthought – and after reading more forum entries about this and checking back with the WP Create a Network page
I wonder if the reason this isn’t working for me is because of extracts copied at bottom of page from WP guidelines for installing a Network: namely that 1. my current wordpress URL is a localhost one and 2. my current wordpress blog is more than a month old (therefore encountering permalink problems)???

I look forward to hearing any comments please! And, if this is the case, is there a way to un-install the Network at this stage, so I can revert to the single site option for my blog – which was working fine (locally) before I tried to create a network.

    Thank you.

    # You cannot create a network in the following cases:

    * “WordPress address (URL)” is different from “Site address (URL)”.
    * “WordPress address (URL)” uses a port number other than ‘:80’, ‘:443’.

    # You cannot choose Sub-domain Install in the following cases:

    * WordPress install is in a directory (not in document root).
    * “WordPress address (URL)” is localhost.
    * “WordPress address (URL)” is IP address such as 127.0.0.1.

    # You cannot choose Sub-directory Install in the following cases:

    * If your existing WordPress installation has been set up for more than a month, due to issues with existing permalinks. (This problem will be fixed in a future version. See Switching between subdomains and subfolders for more information.)

N.B As an update I have just tried to view my current blog that I’ve already started to work on – though it isn’t on a host server yet – and I am getting an error message saying it is ‘not found on the server’
I’m guessing that in starting to set up the Network (and giving it a name..?) that this has somehow altered the URL/permalinks for my current blogs/future network??

Oh dear… a bit of a tangled up mess it seems, hopefully a kindly soul will be able to help me untangle it.. please!
    Thanks.

Hi I’m also tryint to modify the Motion theme – and to add a new background image – I don’t seem to be able to find the measurements for the original in order to match the new one to it… I am adding a photo image that I want to take up approx 70% of the background and the other 30% a colour..

Any tips would be greatly appreciated please – I am a bit of a novice but trying to get on top of this..!

    Thanks.

Hi thanks for the reply, I”m actually trying the More tag out following instructions in a tutorial – the tutorial guy’s More tag works perfectly on the front page of his blog, whereby he can have several headings for different posts (and a paragraph/photo etc) on the front page and the More or Read more tag allows the reader to click on it to read more of whichever post they like.

So I don’t know why mine is not working, using the same theme etc… could it be because I am previewing the changes I make on ‘sample page’ – at least that is what it says at the top of my front page when I preview/publish it….

Will try that code to see if it works, but concerned that that will just take reader to next page rather than continuation of the post?

    Thanks.
