My .htaccess file already had the suggested lines included. However, using Internet Explorer rather than Chrome seems to resolve the access issue for me.
The .htaccess file seemed to have been deleted by mistake when I upgraded to 2.3.3. fortunately I had taken a backup and have copied the file across – now everything seems to be working fine. Pandemix – thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
