  • Having lost more than one long, complex post because I failed to save, I like having the automatic save – and even the revisions. But once I’ve published, I want an easy way to delete the revisions that were made because I don’t need them any more.

Is there a plugin for that?

I lost the flash image upload with 2.6.5, but it’s back with 2.7.

I was pretty vocal in my dislike of the WP 2.5 and 2.6 UI. Ick. I disliked it so much that I wrote a hack to turn major parts of it back into something resembling WP 2.3.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the WP 2.7 UI.

I like having the menu on the left. I realize that’s subjective. I like being able to shrink it down to just the icons. It was hard to find things at first, but I’ve gotten used to it very quickly. I like being able to get to any sub-page from any other sub-page.

Can’t begin to tell you how much I love being able to move things around to my hearts content. And banish things completely that I don’t need and that have been cluttering up my screen for eons.

I’m not wild about either of the color schemes. The gray is dreary. And the blue just isn’t my cup of tea. But that could be easily fixed.

The one thing I really don’t like is not having the list of draft posts show up on the Write New page. I tend to write drafts in batches and then finish them in batches. It’s so handy to just click on the link right there to go right to the next draft. I can’t understand why that wasn’t added back in. I seldom use the Edit Posts list – where the drafts are not obvious anyway. I know that the drafts are listed on the dashboard. But I’m afraid that out of sight is out of mind, and drafts are going to be forgotten and languish unfinished because they’re not in my face all of the time reminding me of their status.

Well… that and there’s still no way to attach a category to a page. But I realized that’s asking for a lot and I’m probably in a minority there.

You’re certainly welcome! I’d be even happier if this would be fixed. ??

Nonsense. I use Dreamweaver as my editor and have for years. It doesn’t add anything I don’t put there.

I’ve updated my hack to work with 2.6. You can download it here: https://www.persistentillusion.com/wp-write-usability-2-6.zip

As always, you download and use at your own risk, your mileage may vary, no implied warranty, etc.

chewru – I haven’t upgraded yet and probably won’t until the dust settles a little bit. It will probably be this weekend at the earliest that I can get to a hack update.

I was bummed to see that, although I think some of the new features are pretty groovy, a write panel revamp was not amongst the changes.

I will update this thread when a 2.6 version of my hack is ready – and provide a direct link again, so y’all can skip the knitting content.

@johnlamansky — is it posted somewhere that doesn’t require joining some community to read?

Maybe I’m missing something, but I just tried this out:

    Test category 1
    – child category
    Test category 2
    – child category

And it worked fine. I set the parent categories up first, and then added the child category twice – once for each parent. I even used the same category slug, although you could probably use different ones on the child categories to differentiate which parent each was under.

@whas27 – thanks for the response.

I do use simple tags, and I do tag my pages, and yes that does help. I’m also trying out a plugin that lets you assign pages to categories. So I know there are plugin solutions out there.

But I’d still really like to see this added to WP core.

I understand that “in the beginning” WP was intended solely for the standard, non-static blog writer who maybe had an “about” page that was static and not much else. But now WP is being used more and more as a CMS. I think that adding Pages into the standard WP taxonomy would help those of us who are trying to do so.

Categories on Pages shouldn’t be a required usage, I agree. Categories and tags aren’t required now, even on posts. So this is a real “don’t need it / don’t use it” type of solution.

Let’s see WP grow up a bit.

@ jackuul – I actually did think about that. But I knew that people were going to follow the old links, too. I wanted people to upgrade to 2.5.1 because of the security fix, and so I didn’t want people downloading the old version of the hack. I’d have to take that down. And then the old links would be broken. So this seemed the easiest way to make sure that everyone got the right version.

    Besides, I’m lazy. ??

I haven’t started playing with IE8 yet, so I’m afraid you’ll have to be on your own there. I usually blog with FF and it looks fine. It’s not perfect, but usable, in IE7.

Hi. I’ve updated 2.5.1 with my hack. The modified files can be downloaded from the same place. Please download and replace the prior version.

Use at your own risk, no guaranty, no warranty, no support. Yadda yadda.

In this version I tried to clearly mark what I’d changed so it’s a little better documented internally. I also took the opportunity to decrease some of the annoying white space in the admin header. (I know the name of my blog, thankyouverymuch.)

Click on “Ideas” and then on “Under Consideration.” That brings up the list of all ideas.

Apparently you have to be logged in to see the list of other options.

    Horrible navigation, indeed!

Goodness, I just realised how badly implemented the ideas navigation is too.

You can view the latest Ideas and the highest rated Ideas on the first page, and select to see More of either. But once you’ve seen that More page, there is no way of seeing all the ideas in a simple way: you have to use Search, or select “You haven’t rated” from the left menu which gives you 5 randomly selected Ideas.

As a result, it’s virtually impossible for a user browsing the Ideas page to see anything that isn’t New or Highly Rated.

Click on “Ideas” and then on “Under Consideration.” That brings up the list of all ideas.
