I’d also like to mention that ANY alterations I try to make don’t seem to show up, such as adding a custom image for the header instead of the default. Does using a child theme do anything? I scrapped the twenty eleven theme because my customizations were becoming too cumbersome and weren’t changing (some alterations were made and worked, then went back to the way they were a month later…)

Thanks alchymyth! The pesky bar is gone.

Is the code you posted located in the style.css?

    Thank you, alchymyth.

I’ve been noticing a lot of people are saying to use a child theme. I have very little knowledge of how to do this. I find the help pages from wordpress to be very overwhelming with information. What they claim is as supposedly “simple” is very complex for me. I use FireFTP but am unable to open and edit the php files (someone said that is because FireFTP isn’t a real client?). Thank you for the link though. Unfortunately it already sailed over my head :\ I’m a very visual person and have been trying to locate youtube tutorials so I can see exactly what I’m supposed to do. I struggle with written instructions.

What I have been doing is going into the editor on my dashboard (under appearance) and I guess make “manual” changes, though I have been copying the original codes and saving them in a textedit file in case something goes wrong. That seems to be working so far… but I’m guessing that is a band aid solution until I have the knowledge to use an FTP client.

I do use firebug but can’t highlight that little bar. All it shows me is header id=”branding” role=”banner”, which is just the image… (shruuuug)

Hey guys! Still need help on this one. I’m not sure how to move forward on this :\ Also I’m starting my monthly payments my site and I’d like to well… actually have one coming along. Other than the WP forums I don’t have anybody who can help me.

Thanks for all your help! I really, really appreciate it!

Perhaps that’s what it is. I was reading about pretty permalinks in the link I posted above and it just went over my head. I don’t know what pretty permalinks are (again, huge learning curve). The instructions said to change to index.php and .htaccess and I became confused since I assumed the .htaccess files was something already included in the wordpress files.

With that then maybe all I needed to do what exactly what the tutorial I posted said to do and unfortunately it didn’t work out. Or, can you only change the directory if you enable pretty permalinks?

I think it’s safe to say that I have no clue what I’m doing here, haha.

It appears that with cyberduck I can only edit .php files with dreamweaver and the .htaccess won’t show even when I select “show hidden files”.

Mike – I also have FireFTP but it wouldn’t let me open and edit any of the .php files unless I open it with dreamweaver (which I’m avoiding at all costs!) so that is why I attempted to use the dreamhost WebFTP. If neither are any good then I’ll use CyberDuck (really, really confused because there are so many FTP clients out there)

Esmi – thank you for the suggestion but it seems like I still can’t log in. I saved the file to index.php.old in my prairiepariah.com folder and nothing has changed :\

By root folder you mean the “blog” folder that had the original index.php file and where wordpress is installed, right?

Thanks, Kjodle! Before you posted I had a friend help me out and it was such a “duh” moment for me. He explained that I needed to long in where the wp-admin files were in my FTP, which was located in the “blog” folder. I feel kind of stupid for not figuring that out myself, yet at the same time I felt like I had to dance around the internet and jump through hoops before somebody sat down, looked at it for five seconds and figured it out. I’m a very visual person and would rather have somebody help me through something so that I can see what they’re doing and not have to read about it.

Thanks, though! You posted about five minutes after this was settled, haha. There will be many more posts by me in the future about what the heck I’m doing ??

No, the wp-admin.php link won’t bring me to the log in page. It just says “404 not found” so I’m close to giving up :\ I’m really disappointed that building my own website isn’t working out for me. Thanks for the link, though.

Hmm, after doing this my website doesn’t seem to exist at all now… maybe I’m supposed to be a little more patient?

For the future if anybody else is having this issue with DreamHost and you parked your website got to the “Welcome” section on the left side of your screen. There it will take you to some options, so go to where it says “Website Hosting”. This will show your domains and an “Edit” button should be under “Web Hosting”. When you’re in “Edit” it will show a list of options. Click on the blue button that says “Fully Host this Domain” (I think that’s what it says. Right now mine says “Change settings” because I already did this).

Thanks Mike! I’m going to look into that right now. I wasn’t sure if this was the result of a wordpress issue or DreamHost.

Well I wouldn’t say they’re solved just yet. I’m getting the 404 error page now, but i might just have to be patient as some others have said.
