In reply to: NarchivesAnother minor issue I noted, NM: many of the apostrophes and quotation marks are backslash-escaped. Not all of them; it just seems to happen on some of the older posts. Filter on author AnonyMoose and you’ll see it clearly in the second and third posts.
No big deal, and you might already know about it. It’s the only quirk I noticed. (And I may have to grab that Nicer Archives plugin myself, it’s a great idea.)

In reply to: Glass House – blog fictionThanks, folks. I’ll play a bit more with the colors; that particular blue is just about the only thing left untouched from the Toni style. >8-> I now have four whole hours of experience with CSS, so I suppose screwing around with RGB color values is the natural next step.
Any opinions about the font? Is it too small? Sans serif too hard to read? I tried playing a bit with Times for the main content, but I’m not sure I like it. Makes it look too much like a school term paper. I know almost as little about typography as I do about site design, so if anyone has any good ideas, I’m all ears.

In reply to: Over 300 hits from Inktomi/Yahoo User Agent in 1 hrI’m not sure, but I believe “Multiple posts” doesn’t just mean the front page, it also means all the archive pages.
But this brings up a question of my own. My own installation of WP-Stattraq only has two page type categories: “Mixed” and “Feed.” If I click on a single-post permalink, it still shows up in “Mixed.” I thought it worked that way for everyone, but apparently not. Is this a flaw in Stattraq or in how I’ve configured my site or my permalinks?

In reply to: Adding more contentSlightly different answer: yes, you can put HTML in your PHP file. But don’t forget that there’s also a .CSS file, which (in the standard configuration) controls how and where your content gets displayed. You could put your images in either place. CSS can seem a little esoteric at first (I’m actually less comfortable with it than I am with PHP) but it’s very logical once you understand the structure.
As for your blogroll, WordPress comes with a fairly sophisticated link manager. Have you tried that to see if it serves your purposes?

In reply to: Kubrik AlternativeI like the border design a lot, and your fonts are clean and modern. One question: what does “Desktop” mean at the top of the righthand column?
I really ought to look at Kubrick, since everyone’s talking about it, and see what the advantages are. Right now my own blog’s just using the Toni style from Alex King’s site with a slightly different graphic, because I liked the clean look of it:
https://www.invisiblejames.comI was planning to hire a friend of mine to do some more elaborate design, but that fell through, so I’m back to experimenting on my own. Hanging out here is certainly helping with that. >8->

In reply to: WP to Blogger.com?So all you want is post duplication? I wouldn’t try to a code a solution at all. The simplest path would use a third-party API-based blogging tool to compose your posts, and then use that tool to upload the post twice, once to Blogger and and once to WordPress.
If you can’t find a tool that’ll let you crosspost like that, both blog systems have e-mail capability. Write the post in your e-mail client and then send it to both places.

In reply to: Editing my forum profileI’d like to second this request. When I created my profile I wasn’t ready to advertise my URL (www.invisiblejames.com). Now I’d like to, but I can’t add it to my profile.
The sooner it’s possible to edit one’s profile, the happier many of us will be, I suspect. It should be easy if the developers trust their login security.

In reply to: Shutting DownNuclearMoose:
“Poker/casino I can deal with, but when rape and incest and other subjects get posted on my site, then I have to ask myself why I’m even bothering to keep going.”Because you’re better than them?
Just my own perspective, of course. You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. I just find it unfortunate if this is what you’ve gotta do.

In reply to: Shutting DownEgad! Seems a bit extreme, esp. given your enthusiasm in recent posts here. I’m sorry you feel that way.
So none of the spam plugins have helped you at all?

In reply to: Recommend a host for my blogAlmost every host will offer PHP and MySQL these days; check the Wiki for a “Known Good Hosts” list.
That said, if you want really easy WordPress and lots of bandwidth, check out DreamHost (https://www.dreamhost.com). They’ve got a one-click WordPress installer on their control panel. I signed up with them a couple of weeks ago, and by using the promo code 777 (found via Google) I’m getting 800 MB disk space and 120GB monthly bandwidth with shell access for two years for about a hundred bucks. That’s a little over four bucks a month.
I haven’t been with them long enough to have a good sense of their speed or uptime, but they’ve been around since 1997 and they’ve responded promptly to my questions. I can’t say for sure that they’re the best, but they’re worth checking out.

In reply to: Monthly archives ascending/descendingComing in a bit late, but I was able to get ascending monthly archives in WP 1.2 by appending:
&order=ASC
…to the rewrite rules in .htaccess that call index.php with the archive parameters. With my particular permalink configuration, my new rewrite rule is:
RewriteRule ^([0-9]{4})/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([0-9]{1,2})?/?([_0-9a-z-]+)?/?([0-9]+)?/?$ /index.php?year=$1&monthnum=$2&day=$3&name=$4&order=ASC&page=$5 [QSA]
Does that help any?
