In reply to: IfElse redesigned: 3col to 2 col and other experimentationsTo go from 3 cols -> 2 cols, I’ve exploit the fact that home.php is higher on the template.
What this means is that you can define a totally different design on your home page from your internal pages. I use it to have a 3 column entry page but there is no reason why you even have to do this. You may want to have a 4 column entry page or even that 2001 feature, the flash splash page:-)
The difficult part is not so much the idea behind it; it’s more to do with the fact that you want to code it in a way that is maintainable and flexible.

In reply to: Theme Competition – The Unofficial VoteI’m pleased to see my theme is in MacManx’s list (though personally, I like my Gentle Calm theme more) but I have to say Rin is probably my pick of the tournament.
Good work by everyone involved and great news for anyone using WP!

In reply to: 139 Theme Competition Entries PostedIt’s going to be a tough task to pick out some winners.
I think Alex should announce that everyone’s a winner and they all receive a free copy of WordPress:-)I agree though that the true winners are the theme users. The more resources the WP community can provide, the more everyone benefits.

In reply to: Making index.php semantically betterThis has nothing to do with index.php or even WP. It is purely down to the developer how they’ve organised things. For example, both of my blogs, Fully Independent and If Else display the main content before the side navigations. With Fully Independent, I even provide a print.css which omits the sidebar when you’re printing.
What WP does is handles things behind the scene. The display and content is ultimately down to the developer.

In reply to: Archives list doesn’t workWell done:-)

In reply to: Archives list doesn’t workWhy don’t you try renaming the file to old.htaccess and update the permalinks. If all goes well, then WP will create a new .htaccess file for you. If it still doesn’t work as you’d expect, you can just revert back to the old file.
