I too have the same problem. Any custom CSS in the area provided for it does not work.

did you place the head tag in the template head region?
Try if placing <?php wp_head(); ?> just before the header ends works..it did with me.

Ok this is resolved – my stupidity, I hadn’t added the following to the template header:
<?php wp_head(); ?>
The fresh install had this piece in the default theme that I was testing with, on the local server.

I also tried doing a fresh install of the https://shri.co.uk site (using the same database and re-uploading the same plugins) which did not have any improvement. I am using the following plugins- BM custom login, Hidepost, one-click plugin updater, ozh-admin-dropdown, register-plus, subscribe2, sidebar-login and WPAU. Any chance of any of these plugins interfering? I have disabled all of these but no use…

You should install a local server and install WP on it. You can pretty much do whatever you can do on a live server. My favorite is XAMPP.

The default number of posts in the homepage is set to 10. You can change the number by going to admin > options > reading.
