Not so much messing with it as getting the permissions required on the file to allow WordPress to do the messing on your behalf.

My blogs are hosted on a third party server running on Linux – I assume therefore Apache but I don’t know how the security/permissions are set up. However, I’ve never had a problem.

We have a work internal knowledge base which I administer and I decided to use WP for it (it works!). I have full control of the server, running Ubuntu and Apache (LAMPP)… yet I constantly have to mess with permissions to change .htaccess or files in the template folders. I can only assume it’s because Apache’s not running as root.

As far as I can gather, that is what jsdesign has done, yet it isn’t working.

On the Settings / General page there are also two other boxes you could look at – one of them is “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”. Make sure this is not ticked if you want to allow anyone to post.

As for the upload problem. Hmm. Check out the following topic on the forum:

Now you have the pages back, have you tried changing the permalinks back to the ones you want? Perhaps now it has “found” the pages, that may work.

It *could* be to do with your .htaccess file as well….

When you change your Permalinks, does the system say “OK, done” or does it say that you need to manually update the .htaccess file? If it does, you’ll find the required code down at the bottom of the page once you change the permalinks. In this case, for some reason it’s not got permission to change the file itself so it’s asking you to do it.

Try re-publishing the page in question, if you haven’t already. Maybe make a small change to it (add a character, delete it again) before republishing.

Also, if you’ve changed permalink type, it can sometimes mess with the links themselves. When you hover your mouse pointer over the shortcut to the page, what appears in the status bar at the bottom of your browser (i.e. where does the browser think it’s going to go)? Perhaps the old link is somehow hard-coded into your theme, and by changing the permalink structure you’ve broken it?

Silly question, but are the people who are trying to post actually registered as users yet? They can be registered as subscribers or a similar role which should allow them to skip the moderation bit.

Under Settings / General about halfway down there is a tickbox for “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”. Is this ticked? And is the person trying to post a comment logged in?

I’ve never used the registration system, so I don’t know the errors that pop up dependant on what options you have selected, I’m afraid. Just looking at the options available ??

Looks like a problem with the plugin itself. Have you checked with the people who make it? Could be a simple file corruption. Try deactivating, deleting and re-uploading it.

I’ve not got a solution, but a few other people on here have had the same symptoms as you. One person’s encountered it on both Safari and Firefox. Seems to be a Javascript issue.

That’s what I’m thinking… the Install program asks you for it so you shouldn’t be seeing that code. What you’ve got on the screen is the actual PHP code, not the result of it running.

Sorry, I was kind of “thinking out loud” on the previous post. I’m much more inclined to go with the damaged file or PHP not running theories. Are you sure that your server/provider/host has PHP running properly?

Sounds like one or more of the files got damaged during upload. I’d recommend re-uploading the 2.5 files. I’m sure someone with more knowledge than me can tell you exactly which one contains require_wp_db()!

Your database is fine, I’m sure – just a PHP file (possibly more) which is damaged.

The main things off the top of my head:

1) Small limit in number of page hits. I don’t think they’ll go mad or anything, but if you’re expecting tens of thousands of visits a day then it’s a little unfair to use a free system ?? A couple of hundred or whatever and I reckon you’re fine.

2) Flexibility. That’s the main one. WP.com upgrade when they upgrade. You can use the templates they supply for the look and feel, not any of your own. You can use the plugins they supply, not your own. You can’t edit or customise your templates. And so forth.

On the other hand, it’s *incredibly* simple to set up and run with.

You pays your money, you takes your choice. I’ve gone for the self-hosting option as I like to fiddle and play with things like that. But for a simple blog, WP.com is just fine – as is *whisper*blogger*whisper* but I didn’t say that ??

Guessing from the errors – have you provided a valid email address in the configuration details? Been a while since I did an install from scratch and I’m trying to recall when it asks for one…

Alternatively, it looks as if your server might not be serving the PHP properly as that code shouldn’t be “visible”.

Or (*phew*) one of the install files could be corrupt (likely install.php itself) and missing a chevron somewhere so it’s not enclosing the code properly…
