…well, a bit disappointed no one responded…but it drove me to figure it out…
Apparently it was the codes from flickr that were messing everything up. Removed these images and every bit of flickr code that came with them. Switched to Photobucket. All good.

OK, update: it turns out that the child theme I was using needed to be updated. Everything seems in working order again.

Thanks dkotter. After reading your post, I did a search for “create a page to hold categories”. No luck. BUT, I came across instructions on how to create a page for ‘archives’. I’m wondering if it is the same principle and I am thinking of going that route (and just replacing the term ‘archives’ with ‘categories’ wherever possible).

Alan, thanks again for all the help. In the end the resolve was to past the code you give, but I had to change the h2 to h3.

FYI: Ended up contacting my host (the awesome Bluehost) and they were able to undo whatever craziness I had done within minutes
