Well I solved the problem myself. And it wasn’t wordpress related at all.

I’m using HostGator as my webhost and had recently enabled the “disable hotlinking” tool that they have in cpanel. Turns out that for the ‘allowed referrers’, they only list the add-on domains as subdomains of the main domain in the account (STUPID!), so I had to go in and manually add https://www.briankesselring.com and https://briankesselring.com into the “allowed referrers’ and voila, everything is working fine again.

Don’t know how much I’d trust the recommendation from jimkrugal since he sent you to his affiliate site promoting WP Review Engine with no mention of it being his affiliate link.

That said, it is a product that I have been thinking of purchasing.

I have been using ReviewAZON which is a wp plugin that grabs reviews from Amazon.com on my [link moderated] blog. So far I like it but it only suits the needs for certain types of review sites and you are limited to promoting amazon products through it.

thanks hallsofmontezuma for answering my question!

i’ve got a log of wordpress blogs, and had been using a different database for each blog. lately my dedicated server has been sluggish and i’ve been advised to increase ram. wasn’t sure if having so many mysql databases was affecting performance of my server and i hadn’t really seen this topic addressed.

I’m having this exact same problem. I was trying to change the default category’s name and slug, and got the error message of “Category not updated” – and not even the category name or description got updated. In trying to figure out what was causing the problem, it does seem to be specific to attempting to change the slug. I am using WP 2.3.2

    Emily from How to Blog

    I didn’t downgrade — I upgraded from 2.0.2 to 2.1.3

getting the errors in sidebar instead of sidebar content, as well as at the bottom of each page

having same problems on blog upgraded from 2.0.2 to 2.1.3 — checked all requirements before upgrading to ensure using compatible mysql and php versions so don’t understand what the problem is.

    Can someone please help?

Mike – have you resolved your issue?

    Much thanks in advance!

I’m having this problem right now with my comprehensive theme list post on How to Blog. It is driving me crazy! I know I’m not low on disk space, so that’s not the issue. It happens whether I go directly to the edit page from a bookmark or browse months to find the post and then click edit or do a search for the post based on title and then click edit. No matter what, after a long delay, I get a blank page. And the post is NOT updated.

    I’m running WP 2.0.2

TIA for any help anyone can provide!!!

Well I fixed the problem myself by logging out of WP and logging in (for the first time ever) as the user that WordPress created as the author of all of the imported TypePad posts. I was then able to see the private posts in my admin panel (although only by browsing through all posts, not by searching for terms in the posts) and then edit the posts and change their status from private to publish.

However, while I solved my immediate problem, I sure as heck didn’t cause it and would still like to know how this could have happened in the first place as I’ve NEVER logged in before as the user that I had imported the posts with and thus could obviously never have changed the post status to private.

    Anyone??

I don’t know which is more disturbing – my posts disappearing or the fact that NO ONE has replied to this thread.

I got my host to install phpMyAdmin so that I could take a look at the actual database and see if the posts that had ‘disappeared’ still existed in the database itself.

Turns out that they do, except in the howtoblog_posts table, for each of the missing posts the post_status column value has been changed from “publish” to “private” – yet these posts do not even appear within the wordpress UI as private posts (and they were never made private by ME)

I ask again, what is going on here????

Even worse, in comparing my post lists side by side with those from my original typepad blog, I’ve found another post that’s gone missing (Entitled: “Trackback spam a nightmare for TypePad users, while WordPress anti-spam filters and plugins make for smooth sailing”):

    https://www.emilyrobbins.com/how-to-blog/trackback-spam-a-nightmare-for-typepad-users-while-wordpress-anti-spam-filters-and-plugins-make-for-smooth-sailing-291.htm

Also now providing a 404 error and not listed when I go to manage posts. (Trailing number at the end of URL is post ID, and that post is also no longer showing up when I list posts)

This is making me feel a little panicky…

@maerk – Thanks for the help

looks like any form of %postname% in the permalink is going to cause really long URLs for me, so a switch in permalink structure probably isn’t going to help me if I still want to remain search engine friendly…

The main problem now stems from the fact that when users email a link to someone, in many email programs the link will get cut off b/c it wraps around and takes 2 lines…

I’m working with Phil Hord on trying to get his plugin which redirects truncated URLs to the correct post to work on my site, but so far we haven’t had much luck..

Any ideas on something I could put in the .htaccess file that would help with directing folks to the intended post instead of a 404 when they click on a url that their email program has broken by truncating it?

    hey egarcia,

plugin sounds awesome — have you finished and released it?

Sadish, yes, depending on the scope of the project.

I don’t have time at the moment to be designing themes from scratch — but if someone wants an existing theme customized, I can certainly do that (and also add built in integrated support for plugins they use).

I’m also available (for hire) for installing WP and setting it up with the themes and plugins and configurations that they want for those who can’t or don’t want to do it themselves.

Thanks for the offer to forward some clients my way ??

Thanks maerk — looks promising! if only I could wrap my head around the regular expressions enough to figure out the correct way to go with this but I’ve been working for 11 hour straight and my head is spinning at this point..

*aside* – i’m still wondering why wordpress created such uber-long URLs for me in the first place (other installations of it that I’ve got on my server have always automatically truncated the URL after a certain number of characters..)

    (@howtoblog)

Argh – that’s just what I was hoping not to hear.

    Thanks for the feedback, projectego!

Now I’ll need to figure out whether it’s worth the hassle of manually setting up 301 redirects for 117+ posts in order to have a more compact URL or just live with it the way it is….

Suggestions? How many browsers still break a two line URL such that it’s not clickable? I wish there was a plugin that could automatically tinyurl my links when someone wanted to email them to someone ??
