    Appreciate the specific advice.

Doesn’t appear to be a disk space issue as I was able to install the Wordfence Assistant plug-in without any issues.

Since this problem with Wordfence has arisen, I’ve taken the opportunity to look around to see what other security programs are available. I’m going to put Wordfence on hold for now and go with another highly rated program to get a performance comparison.

If I come back to Wordfence, I’ll go with the delete and reinstall option.

    Thanks for replying.

Still no luck with updating to 7.1.4 – just tried a couple of minutes ago.

Could you help me with specifics about checking if I’ve run out of disk space? I don’t know how to carry out this check.

What are your thoughts on the brute force method of just deleting Wordfence and then reinstalling the latest version? Would this get around whatever issue is preventing me from updating from 7.1.3? Wondering if the simplest thing is just to start again.

Received the same error message when I tried to update from 7.1.3 to 7.1.4 today.

All other plug-ins and WordPress is up to date with current versions.

Please advise me on what I need to do in order to update Wordfence.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I checked that none of my plug-ins were causing the problem. They weren’t.

When I compared the images that were being uploaded with the ones that weren’t, I found the only significant difference was file size. After I resized the photographs from around 1.5MB to less than 0.5MB, all worked fine.

I haven’t had to resize photos before but this has done the trick.

I am experiencing a similar problem when uploading images. I can’t upload personal photos. These are images taken from my smart phone and stored in a folder on my PC. However, I can upload images saved from a Google image search. All the images are JPEG files. Never had this problem before with putting images from any source into my blog.

Excellent advice. I deactivated all the plug-ins and then put them back one by one. Turned out there was a conflict with Subscribe2 which affected the visual editor whenever that plug-in was activated.

All looking good for now. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

    Thanks for the assistance.

Appreciate the advice. I’ll try these suggestions and let you know how I go.

    Hello again Lucile,

I’ve looked at the directory for 2015 – has a permission setting of 755, along with all the subdirectories, including the one for 10. The subdirectory for 09 was last modified on 20/9/15 while the one for 10 is showing last modified on 3/1/15. On the face of it, everything looks like 10 should be set to receive new pictures.

Do you want me to delete the existing 10 subdirectory and create a new one? First time user of this software so bit hesitant about digging around in the depths of the file structure. Any tips and tricks for a beginner making the new 10 subdirectory would be appreciated.

Hello Lucile – I am having the same media upload problem. Went to upload a picture yesterday, only to receive the following error message.

Unable to create directory uploads/2015/10. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I can see that the software tries to do the job as the upload messages appear briefly on the screen before the error is announced. The existing media library is unaffected – can still see all the pictures I uploaded prior to this issue arriving sometime between September 20 (last successful post) and Oct 4 (can’t upload pictures).

After hunting around on Google, I tried a popular suggestion for how to fix this issue – used FileZilla to check the file permissions (changed uploads directory to 744, no luck, went back to 755, still no luck). I then set the file upload to 644 and still no joy.

There are no outstanding updates for WordPress or any of my plugins so, as far as I can tell, everything is up to date.

What would you suggest I try next? Please let me know if you need more information to assist with diagnosis.

    Regards,
    Howard
