“Not entirely sure what you mean by that “….

    Porkies….pork pies….lies! Cockney rhyming slang ??

I have indeed backed up the database and site files!!

    Unfortunately…
    a) I don’t know how to clone to a dev environment (where, on another liver server or on localhost?)
    b) Can I just press the automatic update button on a localhost install and see what happens?
    c) “move the dev site to production”…… you mean the upgrade tested dev site?

This is an awful lot of moving files around!!

But I agree, better safe than sorry. Just not sure I’d do it right!

Looks competent enough. A bit of a bore having to wait for the big header images to load, though.

    Errm…..in a word, awful! Sorry.

Completely distracted by all the extraneous links to other web sites! I can never understand this death wish that people seem to have of giving someone the encouragement to leave their site. Bizarre!

And I couldn’t see a photo to save my life! lol

    But….it’s not a WordPress site…???

The adverts really turned me off, I’m afraid. They will drive one less person to your site…me!

Second I believe you can just hold down shift and hit enter to make a line break in the text.

Tried that already – similarly has no effect.

I notice that while it can look ok in the editor field, if you then preview or publish your page the editor field loses all the space formatting you just put in and return to showing no line breaks or paragraph spaces. The editor does seem to respond to and save things like H tag formats or Bold, italic etc. But spacing and carriage returns?…..it doesn’t want to know.

Can’t help you….because I’m wanting to do exactly the same thing!! And like you I can’t.

I imagine (?) that when you install WordPress live that it writes all sorts of configurations and paths somewhere – although I’ve looked in the wp-config.php file, I can only really see database connection values, and have changed the user and password here to reflect MAMP’s localhost values (root/root) – but still no joy. I’ve also looked in the sql dump, but again can’t find anything relevant.

My MAMP address is https://localhost:8888/wordpress but when I enter that you see it change in the address bar to https://localhost/wordpress and it says it can’t connect to localhost.

Incidentally I downloaded my WordPress directory in two ways – first by using Deep Vacuum, a site downloader utility; and secondly via FTP. They show completely different file structures!! The Deep Vacuum download has text and content files sprayed all over the place, but at least when called in the localhost it displays…kind of! The FTP file download is much more like the kosher WordPress file structure, but won’t display anything at all…except “can’t connect to localhost”

    I’m stumped!

OK, will try it….I’ve just no idea what a permalink structure is and whether it’s important and will foul up all sorts of other things!

Come to think of it, I don’t know what a permalink is….

Well I suppose we’ll have to agree to differ! I just hate anonymous digital nagging – almost as much as I hate email spam and phone spam.

So here’s the deal…bottom right corner of all admin screens:

“WordPress version 2.6.3 (3.0.1 is now available)”

    OK?

    (@hj)

It’s more like your GPS telling you that you can get a free upgrade to the latest GPS just by clicking a couple of buttons. Handy? Yes, I think so.

Probably true in many cases, although I’m on 2.6 and it isn’t just a couple of clicks ??

The point was, though, that the programme should let people know where they ARE, not where someone else thinks they should be! It does actually do that via the dashboard RIGHT NOW bit, although I’d never noticed it – so I’m fixed on that now. I think it easier if it just said discreetly in the bottom right corner of every admin page’Wordpress 2.6.3′ then I would know where I am – and could then make the decision if I want to upgrade.

I don’t want to fault WordPress for rolling out improvements, but such messages sometimes remind me of over-zealous store attendants who hover around like flies suggesting all kinds of purchases and reasons to buy…without knowing why I’m there. I might have come in to escape the rain!

Points taken, though, and I appreciate the answers and suggestions; thanks guys.

Do I want them?…no big deal, really, always worked fine without! (barring the idiosyncrasies of WordPress anyway)

Telling me that I’m not using 3.0.1 is a bit like a GPS telling me I’m not in London when I’m surrounded by snowcapped peaks. Handy…

    Thread Starter hj

    (@hj)

Well I don’t NEED to upgrade….although WordPress keep telling me to!

And because they’re telling me to upgrade it is NOT showing what version I’m using bottom right.

    Sorry!

    Hi ipstenu, Thanks for reply.

You are right on first point – it is there on the Right Now widget, just that I never look at the dashboard, just dive straight into admin pages etc. Thanks for tip off ??

You are wrong about second place, though, it doesn’t say version at bottom right at all….unless you’re actually using version 3.0.1? Mine just says “get version 3.0.1”

    thanks for help.

thanks Merci, looks quite a powerful plugin.

Unfortunately I can’t see any way to make it do what it claims, namely:

allowing users to publically subscribe (Public Subscribers) by submitting their email address in an easy to use form

Can’t see any public form anywhere in the plugin settings..
