I figured it out. the auto updated plugin Disable WordPress Update Notifications did the deed. after disabling it all went back to normal.

I hate it especially when a pluginyou paid for just gives you a lot of verbiage that is meaningsless except saying: its not our fault – find the flaw yourself and then, after you worked for us for free, let us know.
I am changing to xenforo with my forum from wordpress. this is rampant in this environment. one plugin can take down everything – and its kinda comical if its a backup plugin.

also: I tried to register for your paid customer forum but the reg email never reached me

ooops, it works on messages (where i do not need it!) but not on the reg page
