An update: This morning, I was able to get into the admin area. Seems that WP repaired itself? Anyway, there is a message at the top of the page noting that the upgrade attempt failed, and to try again.

I was mostly kidding last night when I posted that I “fell for the come-on” to upgrade, as the truth is, I really just never got around to taking the time to do it. But now, I really am reluctant to try again, especially if it takes several hours for WP to recover from a failed upgrade. And might it simply not recover itself from another failure?

Is there really any reason to upgrade from 2.9.2 to 3.0.1?

    Thanks,

    Ron Hildebrand

Thank you alchymyth and esmi! No border, black background and no padding should take care of it…

I thought it might be in style.css, but when I open this in Notepad, it’s all run together in one big block of text, so is really difficult to search–especially when I don’t know the text string I’m looking for! Giving me the precise text was a big help! I’m a little shy of experimenting with what little I do know, too, ever since I changed something once in a style sheet that gave me a totally white screen!

Yeah, did that several times, so I thought I was seeing whatever changes had taken place. The more I think about it, the more I think the cache is probably where the problem lies, however.

That did it this time, RVoodoo:

I’ve done simple changes like this before and it worked fine, but I couldn’t get it to change this time, and that’s why I thought perhaps I was editing the wrong text. When I would look at it in the editor within WordPress, it read #000000, but I still had the blue background. Gotta be something I did (or didn’t do), I just don’t know what that could have been.

The only change I can think of this time is instead of directly uploading the new style.css to overwrite the old one, I renamed the old copy first, then uploaded the new version. Perhaps for some reason last night I couldn’t clear the old version of the site from my cache, and therefore wasn’t seeing the change, even though I did reload several times. Oh well, it’s fixed now.

I added the “/*” into the post because when I first posted this, the text from there on down was blue, and I thought somehow that bit of coding was affecting the post, and felt I should try to comment it out. So, it’s not in the original style.css file.

    Thanks again–

    Ron

Thanks, RVoodoo. I tried just the #000000 without any luck last night, and that’s why I thought perhaps I was changing the wrong line, or should have maybe used something other than Noepad.

I’ll try it again. Thanks again for the post.

I know–sorry. I thought I could just clean it up by deleting it, but that option doesn’t seem to be available. If you can remove two of them, that would be great! ??

Thanks stvwlf. I did get the theme installed without any problems.

At least, I don’t think what’s going on has anything to do with the theme at this point:

I’ve been working to configure the blog for several days, and still am having issues that I can’t seem to work out.

For instance, I cannot delete either individual links within the Meta box, or the entire Meta widget itself. The same thing with the calendar, as well as the default Links widget.

The mystery is, Meta, Calendar and Links are all uninstalled. The only ones actually installed and active are Pages, Recent Posts, and a third party links widget, SEO Blogroll.

I’d really like to simplify the page by getting rid of Meta,Calendar and the default Links widgets. Then I’ll be able to tell if the look is still too busy, and I just need to get a different theme! ??
