This is my latest info after more testing.

First I have now moved onto Gutenberg 13.1.0 but it had just the same issues.
This morning (before the update) I went into site edit mode again and waited and watched what happened over the next hour. Yes that’s a long time.

It loads the header but not my site logo at first, but that eventually appears just like everything else. After the first 15mins I have a framework for the first 10 posts on page 1 and the footer. Then it starts to fil in text that normally shows and then the feature images. These are what takes all the hour. If I start clicking on items I can disturb the process. After another 15mins to 30mins I might have about 4 feature images but if I scroll down to where the other 6 should be I get a blank screen until those images appear. If I scroll up the original images have gone again.

Given sufficient time (about an hour ) I can see Header, Footer, and page 1 with its 10 posts.

It was beneficial to set the browser zoom to 25% then I could more easily see how much detail was rendered.

My conclusion is that in some way it all works but something is really slowing down the rendering of the site display. Maybe some action is being performed a multiple of times when it should just be done once. With version 12.9.0 all that same detail is rendered in a thrice.

I hope someone with more experience than us reads this and helps us out. It will be a big problem if this problem crops up in WordPress 6 in a few weeks.

Just letting you know your not alone. I’m using the 2022 theme and have exactly the same problem. When I updated Gutenberg to 13.0 I wasn’t immediately aware of the problem. Editing posts was fine and lists were positioned better.
Eventually I wanted to make a minor adjustment to my header, then I came across the problem as you describe it. I rolled back Gutenberg to 12.9 made my adjustments and the updated to 13.0 again.
I find that when trying to perform full site editing with 13.0 the full content isn’t drawn on the screen, e.g. It takes minutes to draw my site logo if at all.
I think somewhere in the code there is a request made to the browser to do something it cannot do. I don’t get the impression everyone has the problem. We need an Automattic expert to have the problem so they can work it out.

I had this problem since the 5.5 update. It was caused by “To Top” plugin. I found the cause within the plugin settings. Look for:

Catch Themes & Catch Plugins Tabs

It has a switch type setting below. Make sure it’s turned OFF (push it to the left).
Then take another look at your themes.

I found a problem with links to Oxford Dictionary such as https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/anyword.
Is this because the call to that URL is from a machine program and not a browser? i.e Is the request to link to that page rejected because it is not from a human?

I have good news to report.
I rolled back to version 2.3.5 as stated in my previous post 2 days ago.
Today I updated Yoast SEO again to version 3.0.7. just to see if it behaved better. I now seem to have a working version. I have joined with OnPage.org using the free account offered by Yoast using a dashboard button in the Yoast section. They are now analysing my site (it takes time).
When I go to the long post I was having difficulty with before (it’s in draft) I can edit both the post and the snippets OK.
So far it feels good.
I have to presume my previous update went awry and rolling back then trying the latest update again installed the new plugin with a clean bill of health.
I will report back here if there are problems.

After weeks of this mess with Yoast SEO I find I can only edit one character at a time with many seconds between each (in one particular long post at least).

Today I found out about the plugin WP Rollback. So I installed it and rolled back Yoast SEO to version 2.3.5. Now I can edit my blog normally again and get SEO functionality.

I suspect that using JAVA in my browser (IE11) while I edit a post, especially a long one with many images, is turning out to be a big issue.

I was happy for Yoast to check a post each time I updated it on my server where I normally do the editing. I didn’t need for it to be done in “real time” as I edited character by character.

I too have Content Analysis bar progressing constantly. Yoast have not been able to analyse Posts or Pages since the original v3 update. I am really disappointed with the whole wordPress thing at times. I haven’t got all this time needed to fix it myself. I live in hope that some expert will eventually advise Yoast what the problem might be caused by. I have got over 30 plugins but I suspect only one or two can be the problem – which ones?

Just updated to 3.0.1 then 3.0.2 soon after.
In the Publish widget:
Traffic lights show black and below message that asks about removing from Wordfence cache (should they appear above and have some phrase to describe them.)
In the Yoast SEO window below my post in the editor:
Traffic lights in left column are all black.
Title of my posts is not automatically collected, but I am advised in all posts that my title is 39 chrs long.
Focus keyword disappeared in a draft post but I have been able to re-enter it and save it, but I think all Focus keywords have gone.
There is no longer a Meta Description field
Content analysis also suggests:
No focus keyword was set for this page. If you do not set a focus keyword, no score can be calculated.
No meta description has been specified. Search engines will display copy from the page instead.

By installing the plugin ‘amr shortcode any widget’ I have been able to deploy the shortcode [do_widget “Cool Tag Cloud”] on a page linked into the menu to solve my problem. ‘Cool Tag Cloud’ also offers various colours of tag in the latest version which has also helped me. The result can be seen at helpfulcolin.com

Sorry to cause a stir but if I go to the twitter link quoted previously and point to the ellipsis (3 dots) and then select Embed Tweet from the menu I can see the video as it will be embedded. It can be viewed from this location as a small window or full screen. I can see that at this stage the quality is poor.
So I conclude that twitter are offering low definition/high compression versions for us to embed compared to those on offer directly by viewing them on their site.

I logged in as usual with my ID and password entered from my Norton Vault. Then I read an article in the Tavern. I then clicked on my Favourites Bar link to get the login screen back and got the math question mentioned in the other posts. It asked for the answer to 0+3. When I entered 3 and selected login I got rejected with the Error already quoted.

Whilst writing this I have opened another tab and again chosen the link to my login page but this time there was no math question and login has been successful.

When I started this post I was a little concerned that I may not be able to login again. I have not deployed two factor authentication.

Could the problem have arisen because I was attempting to login a 2nd time while I already had a session open?

I have updated to WP 3.9. I wanted to Add Media to a post today but on clicking the Add Media button in the editor once I got no action. When I clicked it a second time I got the left Column menu and the title but no tabs and I got the insert button (bottom right) in a deactivated state (as in greyed out – but it was blue as usual).

I have only recently installed this plugin and it was showing signs of being a good tool.

I hope you will be able to fix it for WP 3.9 soon.

After my last post on this subject I turned off my PC for the day. I have restarted it this morning and the problem has gone away. So there isn’t a real problem. Sorry if I caused alarm.
