thank you so much for the fast response. I actually just came up with the solution to the problem. I had an issue with my permalinks. I use SEO by yoast and experienced the issue after I updated the plugin.
For anyone else who seems to have a similar issue, I fixed it by going into my settings and permalinks. I changed the custom structure from /%category%/%postname%/ to /%category%/%subcategory%/%postname%/ and that did the trick.
