Alan sure you figured this out by now but just wanted to add my own summary as I have read all this thread and think I got it now! So just in case anyone else struggling with it

Google xml sitemap writes to a virtual robots.txt all it writes is
Sitemap: https://my site.com /sitemap.xml.gz this virtual robots.txt physically does not exist anywhere

and it will only write this if you check that box in xml sitemap options

If your theme has a physical robots.txt file already in the root, which mine did!!!!! google et al will read that and ignore the virtual one.

So choice is yours uncheck box and add the

Sitemap: https://my site.com /sitemap.xml.gz

above to it via FTP and notepad etc.

or just delete the robots.txt and let sitemap write the sitemap url.

Think creators of google xml sitemap could of explained this a bit better on site!!!!!

Yeah songdog good advice and it is all taken on board,

however my concern is that whilst I can admit I was an well out of line posting that. This isn’t an adult only forum and so if there was a way to at least edit the expletives used, I’d sleep better.

So for now I’ll take the wrap on the knuckles and hope someone somewhere can edit.

Why is everything in wordpress so difficult and why does every single topic I look at that may be able to help just have a load of bollocks written by someone spouting god knows what, romacox asked a very simple question to which as far as i can see no solution has been provided, just people trying to sound as pro as possible,

people post questions to try to get resolutions, not to listen to you spout some crap you read somewhere and try to sound like a pro.

I spend more time reading all this bullshit written by so called people who know what theyre doing than I DO BUILDING OR MAITAINING MY SITES on my own. If you cant answer in simple terms then fuck off! Were not impressed pase route % root % tking care of exceptions .

If I didny have the same problems i’D FIND IT AMUSING but I dont its a pain in the arse.

uninstalled sitemap plugin deleted sitemap files from root, re uploaded sitemap and sitemap zip blank to root, changed to chmoz 777 then re installed plugin!!!!! now my sitemap giving all kninds of crap 404links, how can this be when all files concerning original been deleted.

Any genuine real world help would be appreciated all dicks spouting there bullshit please dont respond
