Need to get rid of BWPS – it does not work and am locked out!

If I were you I’ll restore database and all WP files from the last backup.

Thank you zarachrome I had thought of that but I installed this plugin as I was setting up the site and the only backup I have made so far includes the plugin ??

It would useful if you mention which version of the plugin you updated from and to. Like 3.6 to 3.6.1.

I thought I had a similar problem going from 3.6 to 3.6.1 but it was a conflict with the YARP plugin which has somehow broken & this plugin is all still working fine.

Make sure your IP number is in the whitelist in the detect section of the plugin just in case you have locked yourself out.

I didn’t update anything. Fresh install of latest version of WP plus the standard plugins I always use. Then I added BWPS.

Then I got locked out. Don’t think I can get to the whitelist as I can’t login to my site ??

I also have this problem. I went to the FTP folder “wp-content / plugins” folder and deleted Better WP

Then there will be a way to fix this.

Assuming that you installed your site in test-site
1. Clear database tables tablename_bwps_logs and tablename_bwps_lockouts in phpMyAdmin
[note: tablename refers to the table name you assigned to your database]
2. Change file permission for .htaccess to 644 in your chosen FTP
3. Now edit .htaccess file, just open the file and remove all rewrite rules created by BWS between the lines # BEGIN Better WP Security and # END Better WP Security and save .htaccess file
4. Change file permission to .config.php to 644 and remove the following lines
define( ‘DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT’, true );
define( ‘BWPS_FILECHECK’, true );
OR u can change as follows
define( ‘DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT’, false );
define( ‘BWPS_FILECHECK’, false );
save the .config.php
5. close your FTP,phpMyAdmin and login to your site at
https://www.mysite.co.uk/test-site/wp-login.php?

I hope this works!
If you are able to access your login then first you must get your database backup
Next while installing BWS do not go for server tweaks those for advanced users. DO NOT enable SSL tweaks unless you have a private SSL.

In the above said procedure from step1 to step5, you need not go for dashboard. All the above procedure managed through your cPanel>>DataBases>>phpMyAdmin &
cPanel>>Files>>File Manager

After 5th step, you can simply login to your site with default login.php URI. After logging into your site, you can simply delete BWPS if you are not comfortable with. Rebuilding the whole site right from the scratch is a tedious thing. But if u really wish to go for that option, yes u can, but in my opinion its wasting your time. Since all your previous setup can be accessible after 5th step of the procedure mentioned above. Any how have a nice day.

Hi BVRamanarao, I seem to be having the same issue as noted above. I think I have tried everything as suggested above but I still can’t log in to my site. If I attempt to login from /wp-login.php, the page just reloads with no errors, nor does it log me in.

If I attempt the lost password link and submit the email address I am redirected to a 404 page not found error page for my site.

Is there anything else you might suggest.

BVRamanarao I would have tried your method but I had already deleted the site. As you can see from my original post it is a test site so not such a big job to rebuild.

Tried BVRamanarao’s method and not much improvement, still end up outside WP and not at the dashboard…

Going to have to backtrack on backups and find the first without BWPS….

UPDATE : I stand corrected. I had somehow added a character to the path for the site when I was in the settings yesterday – I only now noticed that the return URL kept coming up with https://www.thw.com/./wp-login.php

Removed the character by going into the options table in phpMyAdmin (option_name=siteurl)… was able to get into the dashboard no problem after that.

Now to fix everything else…

I had a similar issue and the fix for me ended up being a corrupt wp-config.php. I was able to just overwrite it with a fresh copy and input my database settings again and everything started working fine.

B.V.Ramanarao, thanks for the rollback instructions. I did my first WordPress install this afternoon and also installed BWPS. In going through the secure/not secure checklist in the BWPS control panel, I had the thought, “Hmm, this is making some serious changes here, but where’s it telling me what these new paths and settings are?” Sure enough, after I logged off, I could no longer reach the login page. But I was able to roll back with your instructions, and will give BWPS another shot on another day…
