thinking that might be problem, i am going to move the wWP files on the main domain to the root directory and see what happens.

Do you have the exact same PageLayer setup and settings on both your main domain and sub-domain? – yes, i believe so

On your main domain site if you go to Settings > General do your WordPress address and Site Address match? – no

main domain:

I did as recommended above. With all plug-ins, except Health Check Troubleshooter and Web Stories, the Web Stories function properly.

I am using the PageLayer and PageLayer Pro plug-ins and when i enable either of them then Web Stories do not function.

However, on a subdomain, which has PageLayer and PageLayer Pro plug-ins enabled, Web Stories work properly. Both the main domain and the sub domain are running the most recent versions of all plug-ins.

Thanks for you help so far. Any suggestions?

I removed the AddHandler line from the .htaccess file and it cleared up that error.
