After checking a few times with my host (Network solutions) to be certain the mod-rewrite module was enabled, finally got a tech support person who gave it to me straight: not enabled, and won’t be. They “don’t have anyone running weblogs on their server” and can’t change server-side settings for one person.

Easy as pie to set it up in moments using a new host recommended by WP (bluehost)!

But I’m stuck in the same boat as you and still haven’t yet found a way to get my permalinks OR my default functions to include index.php? in the argument (which works if I add it manually to the default links). My contact at my server host (network solutions) says they have no blogging software in use by their users and are checking the WP requirements to make certain mod_rewrite is active.

Hi graybo, yes – when I add or modify permalinks my .htaccess file is being regenerated, and the new structure appears when I click on links, but as always, defaults to the main index.php page. This happens even if I move all WP files into a subdirectory – the links all return back to the index.php file in whatever subfolder I’ve placed it.

Placing ‘DirectoryIndex index.php’ in the htaccess file seems as though it should, but doesn’t help.

Please repost if you find a solution!

Thanks, but no luck. I’ve tried including this line before without success, and tried again just in case … I’ve just now added permalinks in WP to generate another .htaccess file and added it in again before eliminating the permalinks from WP. But again, both with and without the permalinks, still doesn’t work.

I’ve checked to be certain I had no old default.htm/l or index.htm/l or home.htm/l in the root that might be getting in the way of index.php. Can you think of anything else I might have missed?

Kafkaesqui recommended a workaround for a similar issue that may help (set /index.php?p=%post_id% as your structure permalink which will then include index.php in the comments link).

For me, this works for comments but also changes the structure of my categories and archives links to include “/ index.php?p=” as well, which doesn’t work. For example, without this workaround permalink, my monthly archives default is https://grendelsweb.com/?m=200501 — which doesn’t work. https://grendelsweb.com/index.php?m=200501 and https://grendelsweb.com/index.php?cat=5 would work, but I can’t figure out how to get that index.php in those links. The workaround fix creates an archive link of https://grendelsweb.com/index.php?p=date/ … and doesn’t work at all either (same issue with categories). If you do find where to force “index.php” into the default links calling for comments, archives, categories, or the relevant “how to” in the codex, please post. I’m sure there’s something simple I’ve neglected to do, but can’t get at it. Thanks very much!

Kafkaesqui’s solution worked perfectly for me (using /index.php?p=%post_id% as structure permalink. But solving my problem with comments conflicts with category and archive links ( https://grendelsweb.com ).

It seems that finding a way to force “index.php” into the default expressions calling for comments, archives, categories would work, but I can’t figure out how/where to do that. For example, under monthly archives, instead of https://grendelsweb.com/?m=200501, it should be https://grendelsweb.com/index.php?m=200501. Comments links should be https://grendelsweb.com/index.php?p=6#comments rather than https://grendelsweb.com/?p=6#comments.

Any advice? I’ll strip the permalink mentioned above that solves my comments issue out, though, so you can see the default. Thank you so much for any guidance.

I have the same issue, I think. No matter which theme I try – edited or not, when I click on comments my page just reloads the index.php file (whether I try with pop up or without). I’ve tried various fixes found in the forums, even those for issues around setting up permalinks and for upgrading 1.2 to 1.5. I’ve now removed everything and freshly installed WP 1.5 at https://grendelsweb.com/journal to try to start fresh (but still unable to view or add comments.

I’ve toggled on and off the various moderator and comment access settings without luck.

Can you let me know how you fixed your site? Thanks for any help, Beth
