nothing has solved this problem,I’ve sent a support ticket to my host
In the meantime I tracked down the error log entry for when this first happened, does anyone know if this is significant, here it is:

    [19-Oct-2009 11:52:27] WordPress database error MySQL server has gone away for query UPDATE wp_options SET option_value = ‘a:2:{i:1255969543;a:3:{s:16:\”wp_version_check\”;a:1:{s:32:\”40cd750bba9870f18aada2478b24840a\”;a:3:{s:8:\”schedule\”;s:10:\”twicedaily\”;s:4:\”args\”;a:0:{}s:8:\”interval\”;i:43200;}}s:17:\”wp_update_plugins\”;a:1:{s:32:\”40cd750bba9870f18aada2478b24840a\”;a:3:{s:8:\”schedule\”;s:10:\”twicedaily\”;s:4:\”args\”;a:0:{}s:8:\”interval\”;i:43200;}}s:16:\”wp_update_themes\”;a:1:{s:32:\”40cd750bba9870f18aada2478b24840a\”;a:3:{s:8:\”schedule\”;s:10:\”twicedaily\”;s:4:\”args\”;a:0:{}s:8:\”interval\”;i:43200;}}}s:7:\”version\”;i:2;}’ WHERE option_name = ‘cron’ made by wp_unschedule_event, _set_cron_array, update_option

I was posting pages on social bookmarking and installed a plugin called socializeit but it wasn’t working right so I removed the script from the sidebar file. I put my blog into a system where others can post on my blog and when I put this plugin in and tried to use it to bookmark my posts it kept coming up with other posts that weren’t mine, so I did some trail and error by putting those posts in pending status to see if the socializeit would come up with the correct page I wanted, this only worked when I put all others pending, so after messing around with it for awhile I gave up, put all the posts back to published and removed the button from sidebar, I didn’t remove the plugin right away but I have today and that didn’t help.
I also changed the permalink to custom /%postname%/
I changed the new user default role from subscriber to author in the general setting.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, thanks for your help
