Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: permalink structure / pages not linkingWell, I did find the .htaccess file. On the ftp client I was using, it was hidden.
However, apparently there’s a good reason for that (!) because I tried to mess with the permissions and completely locked myself out of the wordpress directory on the site… can’t do a thing. Even my server’s tech support guys need 24 hours to fix whatever I did. (another reason perhaps for some kind of .htaccess tutorial) So, there’s a setback, but I will keep you posted on progress because I am determined to fix the original problem! Hopefully, someone will post to my ever and eternal gratefulness! (now I’m going to plunge headlong into some other domains that I have installed wordpress on and maybe I can figure it out the page link problem from there!)

In reply to: Categories and Static PagesI am feeling foolish, but I have followed all mdawaffe’s instructions for Case#2, but still don’t get the sticky’s showing up. I am stumped by what you mean when you say “In either of these cases, you just need to list the Category links with wp_list_cats” . Is there any chance someone could walk me through that? I am using a template.

In reply to: Error establishing a database connectionAlas, I did and it is indeed ‘localhost’. ?? And the rest of the stuff is all correct. I have no clue what is up. I will cruise around support some more and see if I find anything. One thing is, when I created the database earlier, I made the name of the database and my mySQL user name the same. Would that throw something off? Pardon my ignorance on all this… I really appriciate your time and don’t mean to get tedious!!!

In reply to: Error establishing a database connectionThat is what I did, but I am hung up on step 5. I get the error message at the beginning of this thread when I go to https://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/install.php

In reply to: Error establishing a database connectionI just created it today through thier “database manager”. I did get on the phone with NS tech support, and I do have the right username and password. What I am wondering is about the part where it asks, “are you sure the database server is running”. When I log into phpMyadmin, in the process list it has my ID, user and host, but under database it says “none”. Could that mean something?

In reply to: Error establishing a database connectionI won’t. It’s when I bring up the installation page in my browser, I get the error message that it can’t connect to the database with localhost. I can log in to phpMyAdmin through my Network Solutions account, using the same username and password that I have in the config file. Thanks for your quick reply!

In reply to: Error establishing a database connectionHello there,
This is my first post and I’m a complete newbie to this. I am having the same problem and was wondering if someone could expound on DaveMH’s post above, about entering>SET PASSWORD FOR ‘user’@’some_host’ = OLD_PASSWORD(‘mypass’);
at the “msql prompt”. Is that within the wp-config.php file…or where? Thanks in advance for any help!
