I’m not sure if this matters but I’m currently on WP 5.4.2.

Basically the issue resolves itself when disabling CoBlocks so I’ve definitely isolated it to that.

Since I’m not on WordPress 5.5, is “Enable jQuery Migrate Helper” necessary?

I’ve waited 2 days now and I don’t think it cleared out but if you could check for me that would be great.

Lastly, if I have to go the tables route, do you know which one I need to be looking for?

I just went into Cloudflare and set the URL https://goingawesomeplaces.com/category-sitemap.xml to “Cache Level: Bypass” and followed this with a full purge.

I checked in incognito and still see it there.

One thought I had was whether this is something I need to go into the tables themselves to try to figure out why that phantom category is showing up?

Thanks for that. I just excluded the sitemap as recommended from WP Rocket and I cleared the cache on Cloudflare and WP Rocket.

Do you see anything different on your end?

I hesitated excluding the URL as I wasn’t sure if I needed to exclude the parent level https://goingawesomeplaces.com/sitemap_index.xml or the individual sitemaps.

Thanks for your quick response. The name sounds familiar but is not a category that I currently have.

I went ahead and disabled and renabled XML sitemaps. I still see it there but does it take some time for it to do the sitemap cache reset?

1. WordPress 5.4.1 confirmed
2. All plugins updated
3. I’ve currently re-enabled Sitemaps and Yoast as well and so far it’s okay but last time I did this, the excessive load came back about a day later. As a test for this time, I’ve deleted Yoast Search Index Purge this time around. Other recent changes include the use of Jetpack

My list of plugins. I see some similarities with Chekki (JetPack, Classic Editor, TablePress, TablePress Extension, WP Rocket, Pretty Links)

Update: Just tried to access my WP-Admin and again had trouble.

Looks like the problem’s back again and have had to disable Yoast again.

Hi @marcanor and @djennez,

I passed this along to the folks at BigScoots and this is what they did this morning based on your recommendations. Thoughts on this? Also, is anyone else seeing this kind of bruteforce attack (might be unrelated).

So I deactivated wp-rocket and enabled Yoast. Right away I saw high loads but actually now that I look, in the access logs it seems to be 1 single IP that is causing high load:

I blocked the IP because each time they hit the sitemap it causes lots of PHP and MySQL usage. I also noticed a lot of brute force attempts on wp-login.php(unrelated) and added some extra security there.

When we first saw this issue the other day, it was definitely a lot worse than a single IP causing the issue, there were many so I’m not sure if wp-rocket or Yoast released a new version since then that patched the issue but I believe it is resolved now as I don’t see the constant sitemap requests every page load, only from that one IP which I think again has had your site open in their browser when the issue was initially occurring. If you notice any issues / slowdowns please let us know but for now it seems ok

No updates so far and BigScoots doesn’t see any changes in behaviour yet so I think we need to wait for Yoast to fix this in the next update.

I reached out to BigScoots and they said the following:

Health check is showing nothing for critical.

Here are the plugins in common for them to test with, these are what both you and the other customer(s) have installed that are the same.

I updated to 14.0.1 and this resolved my issue. Thank you for fixing this so quickly.

For everyone else with this issue, hopefully future updates will resolve your problems!
