Are the emails coming from a form of some sort from the site ?

Or are they just straight notifications of posts / comments ?

You may try upgrading the jetpack plugin, might be some old code that’s not compatible with the wordpress update.

What theme are you using ? and have you got full server access?

@oldglow, yep administrator access is the way to go. And if they’re designing something that needs to go in your theme it’ll mean giving them FTP access as well.

@enjoylearningcs, you’re instructions are pretty good, however with Step 3:

3. Copy this folder to your www folder in WAMP / XAMPP. Rename it with “yourblog”

With XAMP at least, the ‘www’ folder he’s referring to will be htdocs

‘www’ is usually reserved for actual servers as a symlink to public_html folders or in the case of linux OS’s, it’s /var/www

What is your localhost environment ?

Is it a LAMP environment / XAMP / MAMP ?

If all you’re configuration details are correct and you’re still getting errors, it’ll most likely be due to file permissions.

I’ve been asked this question before and the reason was they wanted WordPress on a Windows Server or something along those lines.

If you’re stuck on a Windows environment try using XAMPP / Virtualbox w/ a flavour of linux (ubuntu or something similar).

Using WordPress with in a LAMP environment is a lot easier than anything Windows has to offer by default

I’ve had people sometimes install WordPress on a different provider to where their domain name is registered than wondered why it wasn’t working

So after you’ve uploaded your WordPress files,

have you visited the domain/wp-admin ?

Um, what did you upload to PHPmyadmin ?

All that will do is restore your database,

You’ll still need the actual files (wp-config.php / wp-content folder) to be installed into a WordPress installation to get all your old stuff back.

That WP DB Backup Plugin only backs up your Database, not your theme files / plugins / uploaded content.

It’s actually a lot less than 5 minutes to install these days, especially with SSD’s and what not.

I think it’s a bit unfair saying it’s the worst install / set of procedures..

@kelguy, the guides target audience is clearly not for beginners.
The first day I touched WordPress I used this guide, it was perfectly clear to me.

‘Knowing a fair bit of computer jargon’ (I’m not even sure what that means), doesn’t mean this is the guide for you.

A lot of the instructions do assume you have some kind of coding / web background.

The guide is highly detailed, very useful and well written.

Most of the time there is no need for basic users to install their own WordPress, hence why MANY MANY companies out there provide services which will install WordPress in one click and you can start using it.

Choosing the target country is the best option for the User. However if you’re going to be making updates regularly you might want to consider something closer to your location.

I currently run a few WordPress installs on Linode (Tokyo) servers (I’m in Australia) and to bypass the long latency I end up pushing code to github/bitbucket then cloning the repositories onto my Linode server in Tokyo

How did you install it ?

You’ll need to delete all the files inside the directory so get a clean install, as well as deleting the database and creating a new one.
