I have tested it with its own responsive gallery plugin basic grid and its still the same problem.

Just tested with Masonry gallery and its the same. Also the gallery section of a page gets mixed content warning. I have tested with two different gallery plug ins and they work ok. Maybe that will be my answer but like the Foo gallery and have a lot of them.
Would be better for me to fix

Yes I have noticed this too. It looks great on a pc but on a phone it is just a long line of one photo at a time. If I make the pc version very small thumbnails then I might get 2 or 3 photos in a row but then the pc version is too small. I am using the free version. I have stuck with this plug in because everything else is good.

I dont really use small thumbnail sizes and I already upload at 1200px and wordpress already still makes a 768px size even with all defaults set to 0 so perhaps I just need to let wordpress create a medium size for mobile screens then, but what is the best size to use – would that be what the default medium setting was (300px) ?
I said earlier that I thought my theme was creating a 1024px but just realised that is the default wordpress large setting too.
