I really don’t understand how to create a child theme as I am very new to word press and to creating a website. I want to get rid of or change the colour of the black bar under the header image in theme twenty eleven and get rid of the search box temporarily. Can anyone give me a step by step guide?

I am very new to WordPress – only installed yesterday. I am not a web designer so do not know all the jargon. I cannot upload images into WordPress 3.3.2
I inherited 2 plugins which came with this version but they have not been activated. Has anyone any suggestions to help me as a website with no pictures is no good to me.
