    Thanks; they’ve been contacted.

I’ve also found some earlier posts on this forum which suggest that a corrupt .htaccess file might be involved. One of the people at my hosting outfit replaced it a little over a year ago with one containing some commands customized for WordPress after they’d done some adjustments to something called “mod security” to prevent it blocking my ability to post to my blog and generating a “406” error.

I’ve just done some Googling for the WordPress “500 Server Error” issue, and it’s apparently due to too many connections. Could this have something to do with the brute-force attack issue reported here recently?

Here’s another bit of info that might help: out of curiosity, I tried to access my blog using my wife’s laptop, which runs a later version of Firefox, and received a “500 Internal Server Error” message in the browser.

    OK, I’m in ftp now.

    I can’t find a mu-plugins folder — assuming I’m in the right place — so I’m assuming I have no plugins running.

Deleting unused themes and adding “-old” to the name of my current theme’s folder name doesn’t work.

Renaming the plugins folder to “plugins.hold” doesn’t work.

OK, will do. Diving into ftp now…

I’m sorry, pretty much everything you’ve suggested goes totally over my head. I use no plug-ins; my theme is, “WP Comic” run pretty much out of the box. I’m going to have to try the steps you suggested via ftp as I’m unable to access my dashboard.

This has apparently just happened as of the time of my original post; I posted a fresh entry less than 24 hours ago, and my dashboard and blog were functioning perfectly. I discovered this malfunction when attempting to log onto my dashboard to download my XML site backup. I haven’t attempted any fancy tweaking; the only changes I made in the past couple of days has been to reset my last few posts to not allow pingbacks or trackbacks — I have comments, pingbacks and trackbacks switched off globally — because of a rash of trackback spam last week.

Thanks. Already ahead of you; I wrote my guy at the hosting company last night about this issue, and am just now following up with some questions about .htaccss and mod_security.

Actually, I ran into this same problem a while back, maybe a year, year and a half or so ago, when my host admins were tweaking some filters for “pr0n spam language” and it was triggering 406’s when using abbreviations like “FCC”; I ended up having to actually spell out “Federal Communications Commission” in my post.

Hi… just tried switching to the Kubrick (Default) theme, but the 406 “Not Acceptable” error persists.

I’ve been reading a couple of threads about editing the .htaccess file; I’ve found where mine is — at the root directory of my site — and have found a couple of snippets of code in the ModSecurity thread which are claimed to work. That’s pretty much the last thing I can think of to try until I hear back from my help desk guys.

    Thanks,

I had two plugins, both of which were inactive. I deleted them anyway, as per Step 1, with no effect.

I installed the Twenty Eleven theme as per Step 2; attempting to preview it returned the error “Fatal error: Class ‘Twenty_Eleven_Ephemera_Widget’ not found in /home/sinkers/public_html/stage/wp-includes/widgets.php on line 320”. Should I try “Twenty Ten”?

Going to to PHPMyAdmin to reset the plugins folder showed its value was already set to “a:0:{}” as per Step 3.

Re-uploaded my wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of WP 2.8.4 as per Step 4; the problem still persists.

I’ve written to the help desk at my host about the mod_security update to Apache that was mentioned here and am still waiting to hear back.

All I can say is, it’s a good thing I have a mirror of my blog running over at blogspot.com, or else I’d be totally fuxored. I’d really rather host my blog on my own host under my own domain, but, hell, does WP have to be such a pain in the ass? I mean, is the pain in the ass designed into it, or what?

This is happening to me, too, more or less.

One moment everything’s working, the next moment, when trying to publish a new post, or save the draft of it, I get:

    Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /stage/wp-admin/post.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Otherwise, the blog is visible, and all the posts so far are showing; it’s just that I can’t post new posts anymore.

Strictly imho, learning/using WP so far has been short bursts of getting blogging done interspersed with endless hours of headaches. It’s about enough to drive me to Blogger.

    Apologies, and TIA.

    More on this:

This error also happens when I try to save a draft.

    The blog is at https://www.sinkers.org/stage
    The theme is WPComic.

Thanks, Shane, but neither of those documents had a clear-cut answer for me.

Actually, I’ve already tried editing the sidebar tags in my style.css, to no effect.

    Hm.
    Thanks,
    mf

This isn’t working for me. I think I may have asked this in a different thread; neither of the codex URLs had an answer for me.

All I need to do is bump up the size of the text — not the subheads — in my sidebar, and take down the size of the entry text a couple of points.

My theme is WPComic, and the site is at https://www.sinkers.org/stage .

    TIA,
    mf

Umm, that is, I’ve tried multiple line-break tags. Apparently, the comment editor took me literally and inserted an actual line break. Would that the editor for my “About” page would do that.

D’ohhh, sorry, my goof. That should read,

“When inserting an inline graphic, I specified that it be aligned center, but when viewing the post, it still comes up aligned <b>left.</b>”
