Worked it out… went to the jetpack / modules / contact-form / grunion-contact-form.php in the plugin editor and searched for '<span>' . __( "(required)", and replaced the (required) with the text of my choice.

This, of course, has the disadvantage of possibly being overwritten during updates.

Hi – I also need to change the “Required” on the contact form. It would be great if you could tell me how to do this!

I had a similar problem which affected people using both Safari and other browsers. In my case it turned out to be something to do with the coComment enhancer plugin I had activated. Deactivating it resolved the commenting problem.

I have no idea whether the source of the problem lies with the plugin or with coComment but the latter seems to have been more than a bit flakey of late.
