I just changed to the 2017 theme in the staging and now it seems to work
so it seems to be a problem with the hamilton theme it appears

thanks for your help – guess I need to address it with the hamilton theme area now

@jessepearson I created the staging site per your instructions and tried the export/import on there – it didn’t change anything at all – still seeing all products when I click on the category, rather than the subcategories

@jessepearson the only other thread I put it on was github at @jonathanmoorebcsorg ‘ request – and no one replied that it worked on there – they told me it wasn’t a support forum and closed the thread

yes i have changed and saved the customiser setting as well
it is ‘so close’ but so frustrating!!

no it is not multisite
btw i did post on the github as you suggested, but they closed my ‘case’ saying it was not a support forum!

i would be happy to go back and change all the category view settings, and have done that, but it still does not work for me

Hi @jonmoore I am happy to go through and change them, but it doesn’t seem to work
would you mind walking me through the exact steps you did – I think I have changed and saved every category, but it still isn’t working for me

i have tried changing the category display and resaving, then changing back and resaving again
still no luck
so i have purged and cleared cache
i have changed and resaved category display to be subcategory
still no effect
the shop page (correctly) shows categories, but clicking on a category shows all the products from the subcategories, and does not show the subcategories
i would like to click on a category, then see the subcategories, and if i click on the subcategory I would then see the products in that subcategory (or further subcategories if they are set up under the 1st subcategory)

apparently the display settings don’t seem to have any effect now for categories

thank you for the responses. i will try resetting cache and then resave the category display setting i thought i had saved the category display settings but maybe combined with a cache reset it will work

it sounds like you are updating attributes on PAGES
you need to be sure to have your PRODUCT CATEGORIES setup
i think you have the categories set up, since the shop menu shows them
so now you need to be sure you have the Product category (toys) box ticked within each of your products
so, in ‘edit product’, the ‘product categories’ is on the right – be sure the box for the category you want is ticked in there

however – I poked around some more and found that the CSS
.page-header {margin-bottom:0}
considerably reduces the space!
so thanks again for your help

thank you for that update that looks like another possibility, but I want to keep things simple and having that running along with the woocommerce might complicate things?
*edit* just checked this out – it works great on regular posts or pages, but doesn’t have the ability to assign the button to an individual item within a portfolio..
