Good news!
I pondered about your remark concerning my active website cache and decided to have another go at installing v2.2.54. In a preparatory step I therefore emptied and then deactivated my website cache.
A first attempt to manually install v2.2.54 after just deactivating the installed version v2.2.45 failed.
For a second attempt I removed v2.2.45 completely before again trying to install v2.2.54 manually – and this time installation was running smoothly, the ok message was properly received after about 1 min. Re-activating the website cache worked without any problems, too. It’s empty niow, of course, but will refill slowly again.
So everything is now working properly, however, one restriction still remains: until v2.2.45 (and I have been using all previous versions since 2013!) automatic installation worked perfectly, without deactivating the cache and, as usual, without having to deinstall the previous version manually either. When I tried that after the then new version v2.2.50 was announced, a complete hang-up occurred, the site being unaccessible etc.
As a result, I am feeling a bit unsafe to try automatic installation once the next update will have been announced. What do you recommend for that situation? Automatic or manual installation?
Thanks anyway for your prompt support so far; very helpful indeed!
Cheers,
LeoThanks for your prompt reply.
Possible relations to site cache as well as browser are interesting points indeed. I’ll try to collect as much information as possible and then communicate all I have in a bug report. That may need a few days – be patient, please.Forum: Plugins

Hi, Arnee,-
is this really v4.0.5a? readme & documentation still run only up to 4.0.4, though?
Please confirm!
LeoHi, bossvfx,-
you will find the available old version 3.4.1 mentioned above under
https://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/Unzip & then follow the instructions given in the documentation therein. Whether this will resolve your problem, I can’t tell, of course!-)
